Netflix bags two BAFTA TV nominations

Netflix has bagged two nominations in the 2015 TV BAFTAs.
The full line-up of nominations for the House of Fraser British Academy Television Awards were announced this morning. After winning the International award in 2014, the VOD service has picked up another two nods, for Orange is the New Black and House of Cards. The streaming shows are joined by More4’s The Good Wife and Sky Atlantic’s True Detective.
It’s a year of returning favourites, with Sarah Lancashire, who won the Supporting Actress BAFTA last year, nominated again, this time in Leading Actress for her role in Happy Valley, and Benedict Cumberbatch receiving his third Leading Actor nomination for Sherlock and the sixth of his career. Graham Norton and Ant and Dec are nominated for the eighth time in Entertainment Performance for The Graham Norton Show and Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.
Comedy veterans Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse are nominated in Scripted Comedy for Harry & Paul’s Story of the Twos (alongside James Corden and Mathew Baynton for The Wrong Mans, Chris O’Dowd for Sky 1’s Moone Boy, and Detectorists, written and directed by Mackenzie Crook). Grand Designs, The Great British Bake Off and Long Lost Family demonstrate their enduring appeal with nominations in the Features category.
Olivia Colman will also be vying for a BAFTA for a fourth consecutive year, as she is nominated for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for Rev.
But fresh faces are in the crowd: Yorkshire-set Happy Valley, also nominated in Drama Series, gets James Norton his first BAFTA nomination for Supporting Actor, while Marvellous sees Gemma Jones up for Supporting Actress – her first nomination since 1977 – as well as a nod for Single Drama and Leading Actor (Toby Jones).
A Poet in New York and Common are also nominated for Single Drama. Joining them is BBC Three’s Murdered by My Boyfriend, with its young lead Georgina Campbell receiving her first BAFTA nomination, for Leading Actress. Completing the Leading Actress category is Sheridan Smith for her performance in the Cilla Black biopic, Cilla.
The latter is also nominated in Mini-Series, opposite fugitive drama Prey, for which writer Chris Lunt, a Television Craft Awards’ Breakthrough Talent nominee, receives his first Television Awards nomination. The Mini-Series line-up is completed by Our World War and The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, for which Jason Watkins receives his first BAFTA nomination for Leading Actor.
In the Supporting Actress category, meanwhile, Charlotte Spencer receives her first BAFTA nomination for her role in teen murder drama Glue.
That balance between new and old continues in the Reality & Constructed Factual category, with Channel 4’s The Undateables and The Island with Bear Grylls nominated alongside The Apprentice and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! In Soap & Continuing Drama, too, Hollyoaks receives its first nomination since 2003, competing with stalwarts Casualty, EastEnders and Coronation Street.
Overall, Happy Valley, Marvellous, The Missing and Line Of Duty lead the pack with three nominations each. James Nesbitt joins the Leading Actor category for The Missing, which also receives a Supporting Actor nomination for Ken Stott and one for Drama Series. Police drama Line of Duty has received nominations in Leading Actress and Supporting Actress for Keeley Hawes and Vicky McClure respectively. The programme is also nominated for Drama Series, putting it up against Peaky Blinders, as well as The Missing.
In a year when Utopia was sadly cancelled, Channel 4’s sci-fi thriller receives a deserved Supporting Actor nomination for Adeel Akhtar. On a lighter note, Rev himself, Tom Hollander, is nominated for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme, with W1A’s Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes also nominated for their comedy performances. Completing the female category is Tamsin Greig for Episodes and Catherine Tate for Catherine Tate’s Nan. Matt Berry and Brendan O’Carroll are nominated in the equivalent male category for Toast of London and Mrs. Brown’s Boys Christmas Special respectively.
The awards will be handed out on Sunday 10th May, two weeks after the British Academy Television Craft Awards on 26th April.
