Netflix bags first major BAFTA as BBC rules TV awards
David Farnor | On 14, May 2018
Netflix bagged its first major BAFTA TV award last night, as The Crown won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Princess Margaret in The Crown.
The royal drama has been a huge success, both critically and with viewers, picking up award at Golden Globes, Primetime Emmys and Screen Actors Guild. Kirby’s win marks the streaming giant’s first big BAFTA success, after The Crown was nominated in several categories in 2017 but failed to convert the top prize. Despite the triumph, though, The Crown still didn’t reign over the Best Drama category, with the BBC’s Peaky Blinders pulling off a surprise victory to take home the gong.

Indeed, the BBC dominated the evening, with Ambulance receiving the BAFTA for Factual Series, the Single Documentary award given to Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad and Basquiat – Rage to Riches winning the award for Specialist Factual. The BAFTA for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme was awarded to Toby Jones for his performance in Detectorists, while Graham Norton won the sixth BAFTA of his career, for Entertainment Performance – his third for The Graham Norton Show.
The BAFTA for Leading Actress was awarded to BAFTA Breakthrough Brit Molly Windsor, for her performance in BBC One’s Three Girls. The drama also won Mini-Series, adding to the three BAFTAs it won at the British Academy Television Craft Awards in April. Sean Bean won the BAFTA for Leading Actor for his portrayal of a priest at the centre of a troubled community, in the BBC One series Broken.
The Beeb’s success, though, was fuelled in no small part by BBC Three, with the online channel taking home four gongs in its own right. There were two awards for This Country, written by BAFTA Breakthrough Brits Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper. The mockumentary, depicting life in rural Britain, received the BAFTA for Scripted Comedy and Daisy May Cooper won Female Performance in a Comedy Programme. BBC Three’s Murder in Successville, with BAFTA Breakthrough Brit Tom Davis as one of its nominees, also received the award for Comedy Entertainment Programme. It wasn’t just the online channel’s comedy that triumphed: docu-drama Murdered for Being Different was also presented with the award for Single Drama.

ITV’s biggest win came in the form of Little Boy Blue, the heartbreaking depiction of the true story of the murder of Rhys Jones. It won in the Supporting Actor category for BrÍan F. O’Byrne’s performance as Rhys’ bereaved father. ITV’s smash hit Love Island also received the BAFTA for Reality & Constructed Factual, while Channel 5 won its first BAFTA since 2011, for Cruising with Jane McDonald in the Features category.

In the International category, the BAFTA was awarded to The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, snapped up by Channel 4 in the UK.

The only major omission was Blue Planet II, which was absent from the majority of proceedings. Viewers were having none of that, though, with Virgin TV’s Must-See Moment, the only award voted for by the public, awarded to David Attenborough’s landmark nature series for the “Mother Pilot Whale Grieves” moment.
