Within days of the GameStop stock market drama sparking news headlines around the world, the saga is already inevitably getting the screen treatment, with a new film in the works at Netflix.
Deadline reports that the streamer is looking to produce a movie retelling the hedge fund-versus-social media showdown, which saw Reddit users turn day traders and drive share prices of the video game retailer up 135 per cent in a single day, in retaliation to the hedge funds betting against the chain. Mark Boal (The Hurt Lock and Zero Dark Thirty) is in talks to pen the project, while Noah Centineo, the breakout star of Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, is reportedly attached to play a major role. Journalist, activist and podcaster Scott Galloway is also reportedly in negotiations to serve as a consultant on the script.
Boal is no stranger to fast-turnaround projects chronicling current events, and sources tell Deadline that the film will use that a springboard to explore how social media has levelled the playing field between general members of the public and gatekeepers of the status quo.
It is not the only project in the works about the events, with another film reportedly being developed by MGM based on a book proposal from the author of The Social Network, and a TV series also reportedly being fast-tracked by industry newcomer Pinky Promise.
