Netflix has announced a new kids TV series based on Mattel’s franchise Ever After High.
Ever After High will tell the story of the teenage sons and daughters of well-known fairytale legends, from Apple White (daughter of Snow White) to Raven Queen (daughter of the Evil Queen), each of whom have already been immortalised as Mattel dolls.
The new animated series will span 12 episodes and will premiere in all Netflix territories in early 2015.
“The engaging and magical storylines of Ever After High make it a great addition to our growing repertoire of original kids programming,” says Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix.
“Mattel has a track record of making high quality animated programmes and we’re excited to extend our relationship.”
Indeed, while rivals Hasbro has enjoyed financial success from its live action movies, such as G.I. Joe and Battleship, Mattel have been producing animated fare featuring their own Barbie and Max Steel merchandise for some time. Several Ever After High short webisodes (produced by Mattel Playground Productions) are already available on Netflix and EverAfterHigh.com.
The Netflix original TV show will be preceded by a feature film, Ever After High Spring Unsprung. Both the movie and series will feature the Ever After High students with “new twists, turns and character introductions for current and new fans to enjoy”.
“Today’s kids want to watch their favorite characters anywhere and everywhere they are,” says Michael Riley, Vice President Franchise Development and Content Distribution at Mattel.
