“I’m 29 years old. I work at the Moondance Diner.” That’s Andrew Garfield as Jonathan Larson in Netflix’s tick, tick… BOOM! – and a new trailer gives us a proper glimpse of the musical in action.

The film is an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Larson, who revolutionised theatre as the creator of Rent. The film follows Jon, a young theatre composer who’s waiting tables in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere. With the clock ticking, Jon faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?

The feature directorial debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda, the film co-stars Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesús, Joshua Henry, MJ Rodriguez, Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter, Judith Light and Vanessa Hudgens. You can see them in full flow on 12th November when the movie hits UK cinemas, before streaming worldwide on Netflix on 19th November. Here’s the new trailer:

First look: Netflix to release tick, tick… BOOM! this November

Netflix will officially release tick, tick… BOOM! this November, and new images give us a fresh look at Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature directorial debut.

The film is an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionised theatre as the creator of Rent. The film follows Jon (Andrew Garfield), a young theatre composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan, who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael, who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?

Andrew Garfield is joined on screen by Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesús, Joshua Henry, MJ Rodriguez, Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter, Judith Light and Vanessa Hudgens. The film is written by Steven Levenson and produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard for Imagine Entertainment, Julie Oh, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Netflix will release the film in UK cinemas on 12th November, before it streams worldwide on Netflix from 19th November.

Bradley Whitford, Judith Light and Joshua Henry are the latest star names to join Netflix’s Tick, Tick… Boom!.

Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the movie is based on the original stage show by the late Rent creator Jonathan Larson. Larson tragically died the night before the show’s first preview performance Off-Broadway. The musical ultimately spent 12 years on Broadway, making it the 11th longest running show in Broadway history.

Set in 1990, Tick, Tick…Boom! tells the story of Jon, an aspiring theater composer who is waiting tables in New York City while writing Superbia – which he hopes will be the next great American musical and finally give him his big break. Jon is also feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan, who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspirations. Meanwhile, his best friend and roommate, Michael, has given up on his creative aspirations for a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is about to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety – wondering if his dream is worth the cost.

Miranda, who also starred in the New York City Center’s Encores! Off-Center production of Tick, Tick…Boom!, will produce the film, with fellow Tony winner Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen, Fosse/Verdon) writing the screenplay.

That combination of names alone is enough to attract some star talent, with Academy Award Nominee Andrew Garfield already signed on as Jon, alongside Alexandra Shipp as Karessa, three-time Tony nominee Robin de Jesus as Michael and Vanessa Hudgens as Susan.

Now, they’ve been joined by three-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry (See) as Roger, Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light (The Politician, Transparent) as Rosa Stevens and Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale, Perfect Harmony) as Stephen Sondheim.

Alexandra Shipp (Love, Simon, Shaft, Dark Phoenix), three-time Tony nominee Robin de Jesus (The Boys in the Band) and Vanessa Hudgens (The Princess Switch, Bad Boys for Life and Polar) will join Academy Award Nominee Garfield in the film adaption of the musical.
