MUBI brings Bacurau release forward and cuts price

MUBI is bringing Bacurau’s subscription streaming release forward to tomorrow, in a surprise move to expand the Cannes-winning film’s reach.
The audacious, genre-blending siege thriller from Brazil’s Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles whisks us away to a small settlement in Brazil’s remote backcountry, which is shaken by the death of its elderly matriarch. But something strange is happening in the village, and there’s little time for mourning. The water supply has been cut off, animals are stampeding through the streets, and empty coffins are turning up on the roadside. One morning, the villagers wake up to find their home has disappeared from satellite maps completely. Under threat from an unknown enemy, Bacurau braces itself for a bloody, brutal fight for survival.
Starring Bárbara Colen, Udo Kier and Sonia Braga, the neo-Western revenge thriller was released in UK cinemas on 13th March, with the movie also available to stream on Curzon Home Cinema. Now, within a week of that debut, it’s coming to MUBI too – over a week sooner than its planned MUBI release of 27th March.
The move comes as MUBI also drops its price with a new promotional offer of three months for £1 to new subscribers. The offer is a standard offer that MUBI has used in other countries, with no expiry date and no link to the current coronavirus pandemic, although the timing is ideal for those looking to expand their home entertainment horizons with MUBI’s curated carousel of world cinema, which offers a revolving catalogue of 30 films, with one film dropping off and one film addd on each day.
Also coming to MUBI in the next month are Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Andrew Kötting’s documentary The Whalebone Box, a Joseph Losey retrospective and a Kurosawa double-bill. A subscription normally costs £9.99 a month, or £14.99 a month to include MUBI Go, which gives subscribers a free cinema ticket each week to a specified film at participating cinemas.
