Met Gala 2020: Florence & the Machine joins Vogue for live-stream event
David Farnor | On 03, May 2020
This week marks the first Monday in May, which mean one thing to fashion lovers worldwide: the Met Gala. In the current coronavirus-stricken world, though, the fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will not be going ahead, as people socially distance and self-isolate to minimise the spread of the pandemic. In place of the official gala – themed around the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition, About Time: Fashion and Duration – Vogue will be hosting a live-stream event instead, with Florence & the Machine set to perform.
Titled A Moment with the Met, the live-stream will begin at 6pm EDT (11pm UK time) on Monday 4th May, with an address by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, a special live performance by Florence and the Machine, and a DJ set from Virgil Abloh.
“It would be impossible to recreate the gala on Monday evening, though I have loved hearing how so many are marking the occasion in their own ways,” says Wintour of the day’s programming. “So instead, I asked a few friends to join me for a simple moment—one that I hope will bring us all a bit of joy.”
Through Monday 4th May, Vogue will be looking back at highlights from previous years, including red carpet looks and memorable moments. Six new videos will help, with former attendees Naomi Campbell, Cardi B, Stella McCartney, and more partnering with Vogue to expand the online celebrations.
To commemorate the occasion, Vogue will make a donation to both the Costume Institute and A Common Thread, and will ask viewers to consider contributing to either organisation if they are able.
In the meantime, fans have been joining together to prepare for the date, after actor Billy Porter teamed up with Vogue to launch the #MetGalaChallenge, which encourages people to recreate their favourite famous looks from the ball and share them online. Vogue and Porter will share a selection of posts on their Instagram pages.
