Watch: New trailer for Lupin Part 2
James R | On 11, May 2021
“This has gone too far.” That’s the sound of Lupin returning to Netflix this June, and a new trailer gives us a first proper taste of Part 2.
Created by George Kay (Criminal, Killing Eve) in collaboration with François Uzan (Family Business), Lupin is based on the novels by Maurice LeBlanc, featuring gentleman thief Arsene Lupin. The series stars Omar Sy as Assane Diop, a master of disguise whose life was turned upside down when his father died after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. 25 years later, Assane uses LeBlanc’s literary hero as his inspiration to get revenge.
“This playfully meta take on France’s gentleman thief is slick, charismatic and effortlessly cool,” we wrote in our review.
The heist thriller has been a big hit for Netflix, reaching millions of households in its first month on the streaming service. Part 2 will comprise five more episodes, directed by Ludovic Bernard (The Climb) and Hugo Gélin (Love at Second Sight). They continue Assane’s story as his quest for revenge against Hubert Pellegrini has torn his family to pieces. With his back to the wall, he now has to think of a new plan, even if it means putting himself in danger.
Find out what happens next on 11th June, when Part 2 premieres on Netflix. Here’s the trailer in both French and English, featuring a head-spinningly good final shot.

Lupin becomes Netflix’s biggest French hit
19th January 2021
Lupin has become Netflix’s biggest French, after stealing the affections of millions of viewers around the world.
Created by George Kay (Criminal, Killing Eve) in collaboration with François Uzan (Family Business), the heist thriller is based on the novels by Maurice LeBlanc, who first created the character way back in 1905. Since then, the books have been adapted multiple times for screens both big and small.
Netflix’s contemporary take on the gentleman thief stars Omar Sy as Assane Diop, a master of disguise whose life was turned upside down when his father died after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. 25 years later, Assane uses LeBlanc’s literary hero as his inspiration to get revenge.
Sy is joined on screen by Hervé Pierre (de la Comédie Française), Nicole Garcia (Who You Think I Am), Clotilde Hesme (Chocolat), Ludivine Sagnier (The New Pope), Antoine Gouy (Budapest), Shirine Boutella (Papicha) and Soufiane Guerrab (School life). Behind the camera is Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Dark Crystal), who directs the first three episodes.
The series premiered on Netflix on 8th January and, within two weeks, has already proven a breakout hit. Stats from Netflix project that it will reach 70 million households in its first 28 days, making it bigger than The Queen’s Gambit (62 million) and Bridgerton (63 million).
The figures, of course, need to be taken with more than a pinch of salt: Where before, the streaming giant classed a “view” as someone watching 70 per cent of a movie or a single episode of a show. Recently, it changed its measurements to count the number of times that an account chooses to watch a title for “at least 2 minutes”, which it deems as “long enough to indicate the choice was intentional”, as opposed to an accidental click.
Nonetheless, the data ranks Lupin as Netflix’s biggest French international hit to date, ranking in the top 10 most popular titles in multiple countries, including the UK, and reaching the number 1 spot in France, Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden and more.
It follows the success of Netflix’s international hits Money Heist and Dark, but also treads in the tradition of BBC One’s old favourite Hustle.

Part 2 of Lupin will arrive on Netflix later this year.
