Update: Nymphomaniac is now available to watch online in the UK. Click here for our review – and where you can see it.
Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac is coming to UK video on-demand at the same time as cinemas.
The controversial two-part movie, which stars Shia LaBeouf, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgård, will be out in UK cinemas on Friday 28th February and on VOD the next day – following a one-off, uncut double-bill of Volume I and Volume II on Saturday 22nd, which will be broadcast to cinemas around the country (and functions as a form of attention-arouser to tease the semi-day-and-date release).
So, for those who prefer to watch their explicit movies in private (and avoid the awkward eye contact with the person next to you on the way out of the theatre), you can watch Nymphomaniac Volume I and II online in your living room (or bedroom) from Saturday 1st March.
The two parts will be available to stream separately as well as together, with all three versions remaining up for rent until the end of March 2014. (Nymphomaniac will then be released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on Monday 5th May 2014, when it will be available again to rent and download on-demand.)
You will be able to watch Nymphomaniac online in the UK on Film4oD, Virgin Movies, EE and Curzon Home Cinema from 1st March, making Lars von Trier’s sextravaganza accessible to viewers up and down the country – perfect for those who can’t get to one of the cinemas showing the film, and just the thing for Saturday night family viewing.*
Phil Mordecai, Director of Curzon Home Cinema, tells us about the decision to release Nymphomaniac simultaneously in cinemas and digitally: “Curzon Home Cinema are proud to be part of bringing Lars Von Trier’s much talked about new film to VOD following on from the ‘One Night Stand’ screening event later this month. We continue to be committed to finding innovative new ways of presenting exciting, exceptional film content like this to Curzon customers and new wider audiences. Soon, Curzon customers across the country will be able to engage leading content like Nymphomaniac via a truly unique new Curzon experience.”
Interestingly, America’s Magnolia Pictures will follow the UK’s digital lead and release Nymphomaniac: Volume I on-demand on Thursday 6th March before its US theatrical release date of Friday 21st March and Volume II on Thursday 20th March on VOD before its release of Friday 4th April.
In short, welcome to the future of film distribution: adult cinema for everyone.
