Jennifer Garner will star in Apple TV+ series The Last Thing He Told Me.
The thriller is based on the book by Laura Dave and follows Hannah, who is given a note by her new husband Owen Michaels, before he disappears. The note says two words: protect her. Hannah knows exactly who Owen needs her to protect – his 16-year-old daughter, Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. And who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
As her increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, his boss is arrested for fraud and the police start questioning her, Hannah realises that her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey might hold the key to discovering Owen’s true identity, and why he disappeared. Together they set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realise that their lives will never be the same again.
The project was announced last year, with Julia Roberts set to star, as well as exec-produce alongside Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter of Hello Sunshine, plus Josh Singer and Dave, who is adapting the book.
Now, however, Garner has stepped in to replace Roberts in the lead role, after a scheduling conflict required the Homecoming star to step away. Garner, who recently starred in Netflix film Yes Day and has a first-look deal with the streamer, is no stranger to Apple TV+, with the series My Glory Was I Had Such Friends also on the way.
“I could not be more excited! I absolutely could not be more grateful!” Garner said in a post on Instagram.

Hannah knows exactly who Owen needs her to protect – his 16-year-old daughter, Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. And who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

Dave will adapt the book for TV and executive produce along with her husband, Josh Singer. Roberts will also exec-produce the project, alongside Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter of Hello Sunshine.
Hello Sunshine, which optioned the book from David, has a string of projects in the works with Apple TV+, including Surface, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, My Kind of Country and two shows – The Morning Show and Truth Be Told- that will soon return for second seasons.
