Jon M Chu is teaming up with Amazon Studios for a new adaptation of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
The musical was written Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber back in the 1960s, bringing the story of Joseph and his family from the Bible to the stage. Blending country, rock and roll and more genres, the series has become one of the biggest stage shows of all time, with stars such as Donny Osmond and Jason Donovan having hits with one of its flagship tracks, Any Dream Will Do.
Deadline reports that Chu has been dreaming about filming the musical for years and now, he’s reuniting with In the Heights producer Scott Sanders to develop the screen treatment of the musical. It marks yet another musical project for the Crazy Rich Asians director, who is currently filming Wicked.
The film will be scripted by Daniel Goldfarb. Sanders and Mara Jacobs are producing the project for SGS Pictures, while Chu and Lance Johnson are producing for Chu’s Electric Somewhere, with Jane Lee overseeing. Benjamin Lowy will executive produce, along with Rice and Lloyd Webber.
