Jimmy Carr is recording a stand-up special for Netflix UK.
Carr announced the news on Twitter, just as most comedians are preparing to launch their DVD releases for the Christmas holidays.
He has been no stranger to the seasonal market, releasing a DVD every year since 2005. This year, though, that is changing.
“Thanks to everyone who’s bought my DVDs over the years – sadly it’s the end of an era, there’s no DVD this Xmas,” he told his followers on Twitter. “But that’s not all folks…”
“Pleased to announce I’m taping a Netflix Original Comedy Special this wknd (DVD is dead, long live Netflix),” he added.
The streaming giant has worked hard to establish itself as a digital hub for comedy. Alongside series such as Arrested Development, BoJack Horseman and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a whole host of American comedians have added archive shows or recorded original specials for the site, from Demetri Martin and Aziz Ansari to Bill Burr and Jim Jefferies. In the case of Ansari or Burr, some are also commissioned then create their own comedy series.
Carr is the first UK comedian to record a special for the subscription VOD site, which will be filmed at the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo, as part of Carr’s Funny Business tour. The show is on both Friday 13th and Saturday 14th November.
Meanwhile, British funnymen Michael McIntyre, Kevin Bridges, Noel Fielding and even Dapper Laughs are all lining up DVDs for release this festive season.
