Idris Elba will direct, produce and star in a new adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix.
The currently untitled film will be “a modern retelling” of Victor Hugo’s tale. Produced by Fred Berger (La La Land) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special), the project promises “a sonic and musical experience” for which Elba will also produce the music.
It will be penned by Michael Mitnick, the screenwriter of The Current War, directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, HBO’s Vinyl, and an upcoming biopic of American composer Leonard Bernstein, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and will be directed by Cary Fukunaga.
The Hunchback film is produced by Automatik, a Los Angeles-based film and TV company led by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger, and Elba and Ana Garanito, under Elba’s Green Door shingle, which he created in 2013 with the mission of developing new and established talent to champion inclusion as well as diversity of thought and ideas.
