House of the Dragon renewed for Season 2
22nd August 2022
HBO has already renewed House of the Dragon for a second season.
The Games of Thrones prequel, set 200 years before the events of the hit fantasy series, is based on George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood and tells the story of House Targaryen.
At the heart of it is King Viserys I. About 100 years after Aegon’s Conquest, Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed Jaehaerys Targaryen, the Old King, on the Great Council at Harrenhal. His aim in life is to carry on his grandfather’s legacy, but Viserys’ children – Rhaenyra and Aegon II – ultimately go on to fight a civil war known as the Dance of Dragons.
Starring Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint and Eve Best, the 10-part series premiered this week on Sky Atlantic in the UK, with episodes arriving weekly on Mondays. Now, a second season has already been given the green light, as HBO looks to build on Game of Thrones’ success and create its own juggernaut franchise universe.
Zai Bennett, MD of Content at Sky, says: “House of the Dragon is already proving to be a ratings hit, and we predict it will go from strength to strength due to the captivating storytelling and incredible production values. We look forward to sharing a second series with our customers on Sky and NOW.”
