The only thing more dangerous than the front lines was the fight to get there. That’s the premise for Tom Hanks’ latest film, Greyhound, and it’s coming to Apple TV+ this July.
The World War II film, which is written by Hanks and directed by Aaron Schneider, is based on the novel The Good Shepherd by CS Forester. It follows an international convoy of 37 Allied ships in the early days of WWII. Led by captain Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) in his first command of a US destroyer, the convoy crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats. The film co-stars Stephan Graham, Rob Morgan and Elizabeth Shue.
Originally set to debut in cinemas this month, it has since found a new berth at Apple TV+, which outbid other streamers to release the movie as its big summer blockbuster. Now, Apple TV+ has confirmed that it will be releasing the film on 10th July. Here’s the trailer:

Tom Hanks World War II film Greyhound is heading to Apple TV+.
The film, which is written by Hanks and directed by Aaron Schneider, is based on the novel The Good Shepherd by CS Forester.
Produced by Gary Goetzman, the film co-stars Stephan Graham, Rob Morgan and Elizabeth Shue. With a strong premise, Hanks’ involvement and a stellar cast, the Sony Pictures film was set for a big theatrical debut on 12th June in the USA. Now, with cinemas closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s had to find a new berth. It’s new home? Apple TV+.
The tech giant’s fledgling subscription streaming service has been stepping up its streaming game recently, even if that hasn’t yet materialised in its limited library of content. On its slate at present are Beastie Boys Story, Bryce Dallas Howard documentary Dads, Sundance hits Hala, The Elephant Queen and Boys State, Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks and The Banker, starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson. Deadline reports that Apple outbid a lot of other streamers for the project, paying somewhere in the region of $70 million for the film – an indicator of how seriously Apple is taking its streaming push.
There is no release date for the film on Apple TV+ yet, but it marks the first time a Hanks vehicle has dropped simultaneously online around the world. Hanks, of course, is no stranger to the coronavirus pandemic: he and his wife, Rita Wilson, tested positive early on during the outbreak, but both recovered.
