The streaming giant’s first German original drama, created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, is a family tale with a supernatural twist. Since its first season debuted back in 2018, it has become one of Netflix’s most-watched entirely non-English shows. Season 2 last year continued the story of four families and their attempts to change their fate within their tightly knit community. Now, the final cycle is about to begin. Will the loop be broken?

It generated “unexpected fandom” in countries such as Chile, Bangladesh and Canada – for every hour watched in Germany, nine hours were watched internationally.

The second season continues the story of four families and their attempts to change their fate within their tightly knit community. Through eight hour-long episodes, they experience how every decision irretrievably influences the present, the past and the future. Now, Netflix has confirmed that the show will have one more cycle in future, completing a trio of mind-bending events.

It generated “unexpected fandom” in countries such as Chile, Bangladesh and Canada – for every hour watched in Germany, nine hours were watched internationally.

Season 2 picks up as Jonas finds himself trapped in the future and desperately tries to return to 2020. Meanwhile, his friends Martha, Magnus, and Franziska are trying to uncover how Bartosz’ is involved in the mysterious incidents occurring in their small hometown of Winden. More and more people are drawn into the events orchestrated by an obscure figure who seemingly controls everything that is connected throughout different time zones.

First look: Dark Season 2 to start production in June

Season 2 of Netflix’s Dark will begin production this June, and we’ve now got our first look at what’s in store for the mysterious series.

The streaming giant’s first German original drama, which is created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, is a family tale with a supernatural twist and is now one of the most-watched entirely non-English shows on Netflix. Netflix confirmed this week that it had generated “unexpected fandom” in countries such as Chile, Bangladesh and Canada – for every hour watched in Germany, nine hours were watched internationally.

It is no surprise that Netflix swiftly renewed the series for a second run. Now, the streaming service has announced that production of the eight new episodes will start in and around Berlin on 25th June.

“Our belief is that great storytelling transcends borders. When stories from different countries, languages and cultures find a worldwide platform where the only limitation is the creator’s imagination, then unique, yet universal, stories emerge that are embraced by a global audience,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, announcing the shooting date at an event in Rome.

At the same event, Sarandos announced 10 new European projects, including seven original series – the first Dutch original series (Netherlands), Mortel (France), The Wave (Germany), Luna Nera (Italy), La Casa de Papel Part 3 (Spain), The English Game (UK), Turn Up Charlie (UK) – a French docu-series and the return of The Staircase, plus its first Italian movie, Rimetti a Noi i Nostri Debiti.

Sarandos added: “With over 100 European projects launching this year, we are committed to being a voice for European entertainment, giving passionate local content creators a worldwide platform to share their vision, and offering consumers around the world unique and diverse stories they can discover and enjoy, anywhere, anytime and at the same time, no matter their place or language of origin. And this is just the beginning of our journey.”
 

Netflix renews Dark for Season 2

Netflix has renewed its first German original production, Dark, for a second season.

The drama, which is created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, is a family tale with a supernatural twist and is now one of the most-watched entirely non-English shows on Netflix.

Kelly Luegenbiehl, Vice President of International Originals for Netflix, says: “When we first heard about DARK, we realised very early on that we hadn’t seen anything like this show before – in Germany or anywhere else in the world. DARK is a testament that great storytelling transcends geography. We’re excited that our members around the globe are captivated by the mysterious world of Winden, and will now be able to continue to see how the story unfolds.”

Showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese add: “We are overwhelmed by the response to DARK and are thrilled that our story has been a success with a global audience. Viewers have been captivated by the secrets of our protagonists and have taken delight in unravelling the various puzzles that the story presents. To know that we will now embark on our next journey is, for us showrunners, a dream come true. And our fans can be sure that we have plenty of surprises in store for the second season of Dark.”
