Jon Hamm returns for Good Omens Season 2

Jon Hamm will officially be returning for Season 2 of Good Omens, Amazon has confirmed.
The Amazon original series, originally based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s international best-selling novel, followed Michael Sheen and David Tennant as the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, who teamed up to attempt to stop the apocalypse – with little help from the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm).
Last month, filming officially began on a second chapter, which will explore storylines that go beyond the source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale, the fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley. Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.
Now, we know that Hamm will don heavenly garb once more for the sequel. He will be aided and abetted by the Angels Michael, played by returning cast member Doon Mackichan (Toast, Smack the Pony), and Uriel, played by the previously announced Gloria Obianyo (Dune, High Life). They will be joined by new angels, Saraqael, played by Liz Carr (Devs, Silent Witness) and Muriel, played by Quelin Sepulveda (Havoc, The Man Who Fell to Earth). Another key character from Hell this season will be played by Shelley Conn (Bridgerton, The Irregulars).
Neil Gaiman, writer and co-showrunner, comments: “Good Omens 2 just would not be the same without the astonishing Jon Hamm as Gabriel, everyone’s worst boss. The story that Terry Pratchett and I created all those years ago continues to take us from London’s Soho into Heaven and Hell. It’s a delight for me to bring back characters we loved (or hated) and bring in new characters, from the shiniest top floors of Heaven to the dankest basements of Hell, to love (or to hate, or to love to hate or hate to love). All of them are part of the strange and unusually beloved family of Good Omens.”
Douglas Mackinnon, director and co-showrunner adds: “I couldn’t be happier that Jon has come back to do more Good Omens as the Archangel Gabriel, who is second in command in Heaven. He joins us nearly halfway through production, when we have already welcomed to the Good Omens 2 family familiar faces in familiar roles, familiar faces in unfamiliar roles, and unfamiliar faces in unfamiliar roles. We also have an unfamiliar face in a familiar role.”
Also returning from Season 2 will be Paul Adeyefa (Bancroft, Ransom), Michael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap, Better Call Saul), Gloria Obianyo (Dune, High Life), Miranda Richardson (Stronger, Rams), Maggie Service (Quiz, Red Dwarf XI), Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9, The League of Gentlemen) and Nina Sosanya (Red Joan, Killing Eve, Last Tango in Halifax, Screw). The specific character each actor plays will be revealed at a later time.
Good Omens Season 2 starts filming
2nd November 2021
Production is officially underway on Season 2 of Good Omens, and new images give us a first look at David Tennant and Michael Sheen back together on set.
The Amazon original series will again see them reprise their roles of the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley. Originally based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s international best-selling novel, the new season will explore storylines that go beyond the source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale, the fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley. Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.
Supporting Sheen and Tennant are many of the key cast from the first season, including Paul Adeyefa (Bancroft, Ransom), Michael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap, Better Call Saul), Gloria Obianyo (Dune, High Life), Miranda Richardson (Stronger, Rams), Maggie Service (Quiz, Red Dwarf XI), Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9, The League of Gentlemen) and Nina Sosanya (Red Joan, Killing Eve, Last Tango in Halifax, Screw). The specific characters each actor plays will be revealed at a later time.
Writer and co-showrunner Neil Gaiman commented: “I am so happy to be back here on the streets of Soho, watching, every day, the glorious performances of Michael Sheen and David Tennant. I miss having Terry Pratchett’s genius, but it does feel like we are still all walking around inside his head. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have the brilliant John Finnemore co-write this season’s story shenanigans with me, and to work with director and my co-showrunner Douglas Mackinnon as he steers the ship, along with our astonishing crew, who have returned to do it again. In this season we get to have new adventures with old friends, to solve some extremely mysterious mysteries, and we encounter some entirely new humans (living, dead, and otherwise), angels, and demons. We were lucky in the first season to have so many outstanding actors taking part, so I took pleasure in inviting people back, wherever we could, some in the roles they played originally, some in new parts written just for them.”
Co-showrunner and director Douglas Mackinnon added: “Having a company of players reuniting for this second season of Good Omens is like bringing a family back together, this time in Scotland. Not only the cast, but also many of our Good Omens Season One crew have reassembled. Our team is being enriched with new talent on both sides of the camera so I am excited to be at the helm for six more episodes of what we hope will be heavenly entertainment.”
Rob Wilkins of Narrativia, representing Terry Pratchett’s estate, John Finnemore, and BBC Studios Productions’ head of comedy Josh Cole, will also executive produce, with Finnemore serving as co-writer alongside Gaiman.
Good Omens returns for Season 2
29th June 202
Good Omens will return for a second season, with Michael Sheen and David Tennant both returning.
The series, which is a co-production between Amazon Studios and BBC Studios, is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. The first season saw Sheen (Quiz, Staged) and Tennant (Des, Staged) play the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, an unlikely duo that teamed up to save the world from the apocalypse.
Now, the pair are getting back together to reprise their starring roles for another six-part season. The new chapter will explore storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley. Having been on Earth since The Beginning and with the Apocalypse thwarted, they are getting back to easy living among mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.
Neil Gaiman continues as executive producer and will co-showrun along with executive producer Douglas Mackinnon, who will also return to direct. Rob Wilkins, John Finnemore and BBC Studios Productions’ Head of Comedy Josh Cole will also executive produce, with Finnemore serving as co-writer alongside Gaiman. The new season is produced by Amazon Studios, BBC Studios Productions, The Blank Corporation and Narrativia.
Gaiman says: “It’s 31 years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s 32 years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel. I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens – that’s where our angels came from. Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next. And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I get to take it there. I have enlisted some wonderful collaborators, and John Finnemore has come on board to carry the torch with me. There are so many questions people have asked about what happened next (and also, what happened before) to our favourite Angel and Demon. Here are the answers you’ve been hoping for. We are back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery, which starts with an angel wandering through Soho with no memory.”
Michael Sheen says: “Personally I’m against it, but the world isn’t going to just save itself, is it? If David and I can manage to not fall out too badly this time it may even have a chance of getting finished.”
With this announcement, Amazon Studios continues its relationship with Gaiman, who has an overall deal with the studio.
Season 2 will begin filming later this year in Scotland and will launch on Amazon Prime Video at a later date.
