Golden Globes 2017: Amazon leads Netflix as Stranger Things duels Game of Thrones

Amazon is leading Netflix in this year’s Golden Globes race, as the streaming service looks to repeat its awards success for a third year running.
Netflix first picked up awards acclaim at the Golden Globes three years ago, when House of Cards’ first season made a splash with four nods. Last year, the streaming giant fared even better, with Bloodline, Master of None, Orange Is the New Black, Narcos and Grace of Frankie joining House of Cards in the Globes race.
This year, Netflix is competing for the top prize, with both Stranger Things and The Crown nominated for Best TV Series (Drama). The hit series of the summer is pitted against HBO’s Westworld and the heavily-nominated This Is Us, and is also up for Best Actress (Winona Ryder), while the buzzy royal drama is up for Best Actress (Claire Foy) and Best Supporting Actor (John Lithgow). Those five, though, are the only nods Netflix has received for its small-screen output.
Amazon also has five nominations, with Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent both up for Best TV Series (Comedy or Musical) and Best Actor (Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Tambor), while Goliath’s Billy Bob Thornton is up for Best Actor.
In the UK, both benefit from their exclusive US acquisitions being nominated for awards, namely Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Better Call Saul (Netflix) and Mr. Robot, The Girlfriend Experience and Outlander (Amazon). Nonetheless, the figures still pale in comparison to the 14 nods racked up by HBO, which is dominating the pack again, not just with Game of Thrones but also Westworld and The Night Of. FX is close behind with 9, thanks to The People v. OJ Simpson and The Americans. However, Amazon enters the TV race with a clutch of Golden Globe wins already under its belt: for two years in a row, Amazon has waltzed away with double wins for Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent, making it a favourite for the competition.
On the big screen, meanwhile, Amazon is also racing ahead of Netflix. The latter has a nomination for Divines, which it acquired at Cannes and released earlier this year. The former, though, is enjoying huge acclaim for Manchester by the Sea, which has five nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Actor (Casey Affleck), Best Actress (Michelle Williams), Best Director (Kenneth Lonergan) and Best Screenplay. It will be distributed in UK cinemas by Studiocanal, before being released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
The movie nominee race is led by La La Land (seven nods) and Moonlight (six nods). Their nominations put them at the head of the awards pack for this year, but they are joined by Hacksaw Ridge and Lion – and, in a pleasant surprise for the Comedy & Musical category, the charming Sing Street.
The awards will be handed out on Sunday 8th January. Read on for a full list of nominees (via Variety):
