Frances de la Tour joins Outlander cast as Amazon retains UK rights

Frances de la Tour has joined the cast of Outlander.
Executive produced by Ron Moore and based on the best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander follows Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a married World War II nurse who is thrown back in time from 1945 into 1743 Scotland, where she meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
Season 2 will see Claire and Jamie head to France. There, she will attempt to befriend and win the respect of Mother Hildegarde (de la Tour), an intelligent and commanding Mother Superior, while volunteering at L’Hopital Des Anges.
Frances de la Tour boasts a hugely successful career spanning 50 years in theatre, television and film and is best known for her roles in known for Hugo (2011), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005).
She joins a cast that includes Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones) as Frank Randall/Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, Graham McTavish (The Hobbit) as Dougal MacKenzie, Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot) as Colum MacKenzie, Lotte Verbeek (The Fault in our Stars) as Geillis Duncan, Duncan Lacroix (Vikings) as Murtagh Fitzgibbons, Stephen Walters (Batman Begins) as Angus Mhor and Annette Badland (Eastenders) as Mrs Fitz.
Other additions to the series’ cast include stage actress Audrey Brisson as Sister Angelique, a nun at the hospital, and Dominique Piñon as Master Raymond, an apothecary and healer.
The news comes after Amazon Prime Instant Video secured the UK exclusive rights to further series from Sony Pictures Television. Second 2 is currently in production in Scotland.
