Framing Britney Spears gets UK TV air date

Framing Britney Spears will officially air on UK TV tonight, with Sky Documentaries snapping up the rights to the documentary.
The film, which explores the legal battle surrounding the superstar’s controversial conservatorship, shines a light on the #FreeBritney fan movement. Since its broadcast in the US, the movie has sparked support from such notable figures as Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler.
Directed by Samantha Stark and produced by Jason Stallman, Sam Dolnick, and Stephanie Priess, the film charts the career of the pop star, her widely publicised breakdown and the conditions under which she has been living since 2008. The official synopsis reads: “Her rise was a global phenomenon. Her downfall was a cruel national sport. People close to Britney Spears and lawyers tied to her conservatorship now reassess her career as she battles her father in court over who should control her life.”
Spears does not appear in the documentary, with Stark telling Variety: “We tried every which way to get a smoke signal to Britney about the documentary, but there is such a tight circle around her that we don’t know if she got those requests or not. We didn’t get a ‘no’ from her. We never got anything from her.”
People who do appear in the family, however, include former assistant Felicia Culotta, Dave Holmes, Wesley Morris, while archive footage and interviews with Spears are included throughout.
Since the documentary’s debut on FX, as part of the New York Times Presents series, and Hulu, a probate judge has overruled objections by Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, to an order establishing Bessemer Trust Co as a co-conservator of his daughter’s estate, which was put in place in November last year.
Now, a couple of weeks after its US debut, the documentary will premiere at 9pm on Sky Documentaries, after which it will be available on-demand. Don’t have Sky? You can also stream it on NOW, for £9.99 a month with no contract. For the latest Sky TV packages and prices, click the button below.
