The Mighty Ducks are returning to our screens this March, Disney has confirmed.
The new Disney+ series, titled The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, is set in present-day Minnesota, where the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs into a powerhouse youth hockey team. It follows 12-year-old Evan (Brady Noon), who is unceremoniously cut from the team, prompting him and his mom Alex (Lauren Graham) to build their own ragtag team of misfits. But with the help of Gordon Bombay, they discover the joys of playing just for the love of the game.
With Emilio Estevez reprising his role from the 90s movie trilogy – and with the films’ original writer Steve Brill penning the show, Till Death creators Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa – the series is squarely aimed at both nostalgic franchise fans and their younger relatives. The cast includes Swayam Bhatia, Taegen Burns, Julee Cerda, Bella Higginbotham, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Maxwell Simkins and De’Jon Watts.
The 10-episode series will premiere on 26th March on Disney+. Here’s the first teaser:
First look: Emilio Estevez returns for Disney+ Mighty Ducks series
16th February 2020
Emilio Estevez is officially heading back out on the ice for a new Mighty Ducks series on Disney+.
The original series joins a number of sequels and reboots for the House of Mouse’s subscription platform, as Disney looks to build on its brand to grow its new service. That nostalgia-friendly approach just got a major boost with the return of Estevez as Coach Gordon Bombay, who was a key figure in the hit 1990s franchise.
The series will see Estevez star alongside Lauren Graham and young star Brady Noon, alongside a cast that includes Swayam Bhatia, Taegen Burns, Julee Cerda, Bella Higginbotham, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Maxwell Simkins and De’Jon Watts. The original film’s writer is also returning, with Steve Brill penning the 10-part series, alongside Till Death creators Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa.
The reboot is set in present-day Minnesota, where the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs into a powerhouse youth hockey team. Noon plays 12-year-old Evan, who is unceremoniously cut from the team, prompting him and his mom Alex (Graham) to build their own ragtag team of misfits. With the help of Gordon Bombay, they discover the joys of playing just for the love of the game.
“Once a Duck, always a Duck!, and after 25 years, I am delighted to lace up my skates, put on Coach Bombay’s jacket and return to play the iconic character for this new chapter in The Mighty Ducks franchise,” Estevez said in a statement. “Likewise, I am thrilled to return to my old stomping grounds with my friends at Disney and Steve Brill, the original creator of the franchise, to join them on their exciting new platform, Disney+.”
Estevez also will serve as an executive producer, alongside Brill, Goldsmith and Yuspa, with Goldsmith and Yuspa officially appointed as showrunners. James Griffiths and Michael Spiller will also serve as executive producers, with Griffiths directing.
“It was an easy decision to bring back the Quack Attack with a modern and fresh twist,” added Agnes Chu, SVP, Content, Disney+. “For a generation, The Mighty Ducks stood for teamwork, friendship, and heart and we’re excited to see the Ducks fly together once again and bring the franchise to new audiences around the world. We are thrilled to have Emilio Estevez reprising his iconic role.”
Also in the works for Disney is a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel, which will see Rick Moranis similarly return to reprise his iconic role from that franchise. His return as Wayne Szalinski, who accidentally shrunk his kids back in 1989, reunites him with the original film’s director Joe Johnston, with Josh Gad cast as Wayne’s son. The new movie, though, will be given a theatrical release by Disney before eventually streaming on Disney+.
