Ripper Street returns to BBC for final season
James R | On 13, Jun 2017
Season 5 of Ripper Street will premiere on BBC Two this June, as the period crime drama returns for its final ever episodes.
The powerful closing chapter of the BAFTA-winning show consists of six episodes and picks up days after the shocking end to Season 4. Detective Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen – Anna Karenina), surgeon Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg – The Divide) and ‘Long’ Susan Hart (MyAnna Buring – Downton Abbey) go on the run in search of justice.
Making up one single story, the six-part climax first debuted on Amazon Prime Video in October last year, after the streaming service resurrected the drama, following its cancellation by the broadcast. Written and created by Richard Warlow and produced by Tiger Aspect Drama and Lookout Point, the mini-series sees our heroes on the tail of a serial killer (Jonas Armstrong, Robin Hood) with subhuman desires, but a superhuman ability to avoid apprehension. Season 5 also sees the return of a familiar foe in Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine (Joseph Mawle, In the Heart of the Sea), who comes back to Whitechapel to track down its newest fugitives.
“Warlow’s drama has always excelled with its grim brand of crime mysteries, its period details and its hats, but it has never been better than in its recent years. Whether due to Amazon’s freer reign, allowing for longer, uncut episodes, or due to the show’s natural growth, as its characters’ backstories have become more intertwined and complex, the programme has stepped up its game with every season,” we wrote in our spoiler-free review of the opening episodes of the season, which is available in full on Amazon Prime Video.
Don’t have an Amazon subscription? You can watch the season every Monday over the coming six weeks on BBC Two, with Episode 1 premiering at 9pm on Monday 19th June.
New trailer prepares for final season of Ripper Street
7th October 2016
It’s now less than a week until we have to bid farewell to Ripper Street, as Amazon’s crime drama returns for its fifth and final season.
Now, the streaming site is paving the way for the climactic six episodes, which will tell a single story – the story of what happened following Season 4’s shocking, thrilling finale.
“Justice will be served,” promises the teaser, which makes it clear that things are about to get even darker than normal.
All six episodes will be released at once on Wednesday 12th October. Stay tuned for our review.
Ripper Street Season 5 will premiere this October
27th September 2016
Amazon has confirmed that the fifth and final season of Ripper Street will air this October.
The show, which was resurrected by the subscription site following its cancellation by the BBC, has gotten better and better, with Season 4 building to a thrilling cliffhanger that we crowned the show’s best ever episode in our review.
Now, Season 5 will pick up the plot threads left by the fourth run in a six-episode season that will make up one single story. It’s only fitting, then, that Amazon has decided to release all of the episodes in one go on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday 12th October.
Written and created by Richard Warlow and produced by Tiger Aspect Drama and Lookout Point, the mini-series finale will see our heroes become fugitives, forced to operate outside the law as they pursue the most insidious enemy they have encountered yet.
Inspector Reid (Matthew Macfadyen, The Enfield Haunting) Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg, The Immigrant) and ‘Long’ Susan Hart (MyAnna Buring, The Twilight Saga) will all return to hunt a serial killer (Jonas Armstrong, Robin Hood) with subhuman desires, but a superhuman ability to avoid apprehension. Season 5 will also see the return of a familiar foe in Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine (Joseph Mawle, In the Heart of the Sea), who returns to Whitechapel to hunt down its newest fugitives.
Not seen Season 4 yet? You can catch up with all episodes on Amazon Prime Video, along with the first three seasons, as part of a £5.99 monthly subscription.

Filming begins on fifth and final series of Ripper Street
7th March 2016
Filming has started on Season 5 of Ripper Street, Amazon has announced, ready for release this year.
The BAFTA-nominated show, which recently finished its fourth run on Amazon Prime Video, will end with Season 5, as Richard Warlow’s drama concludes with the end of the Victorian age.
The popular drama has consistently proved a hit with both Prime members and critics, following Amazon’s decision to resurrect the BBC series after it was cancelled two seasons in.
Since Amazon’s revival, the tale of the police officers of H Division’s attempts to maintain law and order on the streets of Whitechapel have gotten better and better, with Season 4 climaxing in a season finale that rivalled Game of Thrones for shock factor. “The best episode of Ripper Street since Season 3’s opener – and quite possibly the best yet,” we wrote in our review.
Season 5 will see Joseph Mawle (In the Heart of the Sea) rejoin the series as the feared Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine, intent on a mission of revenge after last being seen in the Season 2 finale, when Inspector Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) plotted with Drake (Jerome Flynn) to take Shine’s life. Mawle joins a cast that has boasted recent guest stars David Threlfall (Shameless), Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter) and David Warner, alongside regulars MyAnna Buring and Adam Rothenberg.
Shooting has now begun in Dublin, with the final season set to be released later in 2016 exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
