Emmys 2024: Shogun, The Bear and Baby Reindeer dominate winners

Shogun, The Bear and Baby Reindeer were the big winners at the 2024 Emmys last night.
The ceremony, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, crowned the brightest of the small screen from the past 12 months, only eight months after its last ceremony due to a delay caused by the Hollywood strikes. As expected, FX’s Shogun reigned supreme, taking home the Best Drama prize. The previous weekend, it had broken the record of the most wins by a series in a single season, taking home 14 Creative Arts Emmys. Now, with four Primetime Emmys added to its total, it brought home a staggering 18 Emmys for its first season – including Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, a historic Lead Actress for Anna Sawai (the first ever Japanese star to win in that category) and Directing for Frederick EO Toye.
In the comedy race, The Bear continued to dominate – prompting a joke from Eugene Levy in the opening monologue about its controversial categorisation as a category – taking home 11 trophies overall, up from its own record of 10. The prizes included Directing for Christopher Storer, Lead Actor for Jeremy Allen White and Supporting Actor for Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, meanwhile, commanded the limited series landscape, with creator Richard Gadd bagging both Lead Actor and Writing prizes, alongside Supporting Actress Jessica Gunning.
If it was a night of largely expected victories, though, there were some surprise triumphs, including Hacks pipping The Bear to Best Comedy, Slow Horses galloping past Shogun to win Writing for a Drama, The Traitors out-strutting RuPaul’s Drag Race to become best Reality Competition, and Fargo’s Lamorne Morris out-gunning The Sympathizer’s Robert Downey Jr to be named the best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series.
