Emmys 2017: Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale makes history
James R | On 18, Sep 2017
Hulu made history at the 2017 Emmys last night, as it became the first ever show by a streaming site to win an Emmy for Best Drama Series. The show beat competition from Netflix’s The Crown, Stranger Things and House of Cards – indeed, 2017 was almost destined to be a history-making year, with four out of the seven top drama nominees coming from streaming services.
The Handmaid’s Tale didn’t just take home one big prize, though: it swept the board, bagging Best Lead Actress for Elisabeth Moss, Best Supporting Actress for Ann Dowd, Guest Actress for Alexis Bledel and Best Writing (Bruce Miller) and Directing (Reed Morano).
The night’s other major winner was another female-led show, as HBO’s Big Little Lies made up for the cable network’s lack of Game of Thrones, taking home Best Limited Series, Best Actress in a Limited Series (Nicole Kidman), Best Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), Best Directing (Jean-Marc Vallee) and Best Supporting Actor (Alexander Skarsgård).
Continuing her winning streak, meanwhile, was comedy star of the night Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won Best Actress in a Comedy for Veep for the fifth year in a row. Veep also won Best Comedy for the third year in a row.
2017, though, has been a political year for TV, with history clearly in the mind of many in the industry: Stephen Colbert jokes about President Donald Trump’s lack of an Emmy for The Apprentice, before wheeling out Sean Spicer himself to declare the show’s audience was the largest of all time. But away from the prescience of The Handmaid’s Tale, Saturday Night Live’s resurgence has been the biggest sign of that political shift, with the sketch series bagging eight wins, including gongs for Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon, as well as Melissa McCarthy and Dave Chappelle.
History was also made by Donald Glover, who became the first black person to win an Emmy for Directing, thanks to his superb comedy series Atlanta. He also won Best Actor in a Comedy too. Lena Waithe became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for writing a comedy series, taking home the Best Writing prize with Aziz Ansari for Netflix’s Master of None. The only win more satisfying to watch was Riz Ahmed, who took home Best Actor in a Limited Series for HBO’s The Night Of.
Other wins included our own Charlie Brooker, who bagged two awards for his San Junipero episode of Black Mirror (Best Writing and Best Television Movie). That marked yet another success for streaming services, on a night where history was made in all corners of the room. HBO led the night with 20 wins in total, but Netflix was close behind with 20, followed by NBC and Hulu on 15 and 10 respectively. Amazon trailed with two. In the words of Colbert’s opening monologue, “these days everyone loves streaming video, just ask Ted Cruz”.
