The BBC has commissioned a new music series hosted by Guy Garvey for BBC iPlayer.
Music Box with Guy Garvey will see the Elbow frontman, who is already a BBC Radio 6 Music presenter, discuss artists that he is most excited about at the moment. Each episode will also feature a member of the BBC Music radio family sharing their views and insight about their shared musical loves.
The show will include exclusive and unseen footage, from musical performances to brand-new videos, as well as backstage interviews with Guy’s chosen artists. Garvey will also delve into the BBC’s archive to curate a selection of classic performances.
“We are a nation of music lovers and the show is specifically designed to connect people with great music that they may not have the time to go and find during their daily lives,” says Garvey. “In an extension of the spirit of curation that BBC Radio 6 Music lives by, I am literally showcasing the music I think will one day be worthy of the word classic.
“I’m really proud to have this opportunity, as the way music is discovered has changed. It’s not that easy for new artists to break through, and platforms like these will hopefully lead people to find their new favourite music.”
James Stirling, Editor of BBC Music, adds: “We’re really excited about this brand-new BBC Music commission and in Guy we have one of the UK’s most talented and respected musicians. BBC Music is developing music programming in different forms and this is the next step in an exciting future.”
The series is part of BBC Music’s exclusive BBC iPlayer commissions, from BBC Music Festival Pass, which recently took viewers on a behind-the-scenes journey with Hackney collective Rudimental, as they headlined Wildlife Festival, and All Shook Up, a new live music series hosted by 6 Music presenter Marc Riley, to Amy Winehouse In Her Own Words, a portrait of Amy Winehouse threaded together from extracts from interviews she gave to the BBC that premiered this week. (You can read our review of the latter here.)
Artist in this series will include Here We Go Magic, This is the Kit, Songhoy Blues, Little Dragon, TuNe-YaRdS and Villagers. Confirmed guests currently include Cerys Matthews, Tom Ravenscroft, Radio 2’s Bob Harris and Lauren Laverne.
The fortnightly series will premiere on BBC iPlayer in July 2015 and run for six episodes.
