It’s only a matter of days now until Hamilton hits Disney+ worldwide and while fans are willing to wait for it, the House of Mouse is giving everyone their first glimpse at the recorded production with a new teaser of the show.
With book, music, and lyrics by Miranda, Hamilton is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, the show has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton – based on Ron Chernow’s biography – and created a phenomenon that has impacted culture, politics, and education.
Filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, Hamilton stars Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton; Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler; Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr; Tony Award nominees Christopher Jackson as George Washington; Jonathan Groff as King George; Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton; and Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds; Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison; and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton.
You can get a teaser of each of those in action in the new trailer, which includes a snippet of the opening song and Satisfied. You can see the whole show when it premieres on 3rd July. Here’s the video:
Hamilton is available on Disney+ UK, as part of a £7.99 monthly subscription or a £79.99 yearly subscription.
Disney+ to release Hamilton this July
12th May 2020
Hamilton is headed to Disney+ this July.
The House of Mouse snapped up the rights to Lin-Manual Miranda’s Broadway smash hit earlier this year. Now, it’s fast tracking the release to bring the filmed version of the 11-time Tony winner to living rooms around the world.
“No other artistic work in the last decade has had the cultural impact of Hamilton — an inspiring and captivating tale told and performed in a powerfully creative way. In light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world, this story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love and the power of people to unite against the forces of adversity is both relevant and impactful,” said Robert A. Iger, Executive Chairman of The Walt Disney Company. “We are thrilled to bring this phenomenon to Disney+ on the eve of Independence Day, and we have the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team behind Hamilton to thank for allowing us to do so more than a year before planned.”
“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought Hamilton to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda. “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”

Disney snaps up rights to Hamilton movie
4th February 2020
Disney has snapped up the rights to a movie adaptation of the hit musical Hamilton.
With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, the show has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a phenomenon that has impacted culture, politics, and education. Based on Ron Chernow’s biography. It has won Tony, Grammy and Olivier Awards, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. And now, it’s got the Disney seal of approval.
Deadline reports that the House of Mouse paid a whopping $75 million for the worldwide rights to the show, committing to a wide global theatrical release for the film. Shot two weeks before the original cast left the Broadway production, it runs for 2 hours and 40 minutes and, with its zeitgeist appeal, promises to be a big draw for audiences unable to get to the theatre to see it.
Crucially, after its theatrical run, it will be released on Disney+, which will become a major title for the fledgling streaming platform, as it looks to rival Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and more. Compared to the hundreds of pounds and dollars that some tickets for the show fetch, Disney will be banking on the fact that a fiver for a monthly subscription to Disney+ to watch it will prove hard to resist for many viewers.
The film, which is directed by the original production’s helmer Tommy Kail, was shot over three live performances, with some additional shots without an audience, allowing for multiple angles to cut between.
The deal was announced by Lin-Manuela Miranda on Twitter this week.
