Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Dee Williams and Anthony Daniels have all joined the voice cast for the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.
The animated special – which playfully nods to the infamous 1978 special that George Lucas has since disowned entirely – reunites Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, Rose and the droids for a joyous feast on Life Day. Rey sets off on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious Jedi Temple, she is hurled into a cross-timeline adventure through beloved moments in Star Wars cinematic history, coming into contact with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan and other iconic heroes and villains from all nine Skywalker saga films. But will she make it back in time for the Life Day feast and learn the true meaning of holiday spirit? And will Chewbacca’s son, Lumpy, who notoriously appeared in the original live-action special make an appearance.
What we do know is that a number of familiar faces will be on hand, with Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) all confirmed as lending their vocal talents, alongside Star Wars: The Clone Wars vets Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Tom Kane (Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn), James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Dee Bradley Baker (clone troopers).
The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special” is a production of Atomic Cartoons, the LEGO Group, and Lucasfilm. It is directed by Ken Cunningham and written by David Shayne, who is also co-executive producer. James Waugh, Josh Rimes, Jason Cosler, Jacqui Lopez, Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone are executive producers.
It will premiere on Disney+ on Tuesday 17th November, aka. Life Day. Here’s a poster to give you an idea of the tone:
Disney+ announces The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special
13th August 2020
For any Star Wars fan, the words “Holiday Special” conjures up some very awkward memories, after a TV special aired in 1978 to tie Episode IV of George Lucas’ saga with Episode V. Taking us to the Wookiee home world to celebrate “Life Day”, it brought together the film’s original cast along with celebrity guests such as Art Carney and Jefferson Starship, plus Chewbacca’s son, Lumpy.
After years of the film not being released or rebroadcast – and distributed solely among fans as a cult curio via bootleg copies – Disney looks to be trying to push the film further out of sight and mind with a new holiday special. With added LEGO.
The animated special will reunite Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, Rose and the droids for a joyous feast on – you guessed it – Life Day. Directly following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it will see Rey leave her friends to prepare for Life Day as she sets off on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force.
