Stellan Skarsgard, Kyle Soller join Disney+ Rogue One series
18th April 2020
Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller have joined the new Disney+ Rogue One spin-off series.
The prequel to the Star Wars film, which was announced by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger back in 2018, will follow the adventures of the rebel spy, Cassian Andor, who appeared in Rogue One and helped Jyn escape from Imperial transport before bringing her to Mon Mothma so the Alliance could learn more about the Empire’s plans for the Death Star.
Set during the formative years of the Rebellion, the spy thriller in space will see Diego Luna reprise his role as Cassian, joined by Alan Tudyk, reprising his role as Cassian’s sarcastic droid sidekick. Now, they’ve got some company, with Variety reporting that Skarsgard and Soller are in final talks for roles on the show.
Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote Rogue One, will pen the pilot for the project, with The Americans’ Stephen Schiff already on board as showrunner. It joins The Mandalorian, Disney+’s flagship Star Wars series, and a new show focused on a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor reprising his role as the much-loved Jedi.
Skarsgard comes to the show fresh from HBO’s smash hit Chernobyl, which earned him an Emmy nod, while Soller will be recognised by British audiences from his roles in Poldark and Brexit: The Uncivil War.
Little is known about the characters the two will play, but what we do know is that the show is one of many Disney+ productions hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Originally slated for a 2021 release, with the industry-wide shutdown set to continue indefinitely, it could be a longer wait than planned to see the new show lift off.
The Americans’ Stephen Schiff set as showrunner for Star Wars Cassian series
3rd December 2018
The Americans Executive Producer Stephen Schiff has signed on as showrunner for the upcoming Star Wars series about Cassian Andor.
The prequel to Rogue One, which was announced by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger last month, will follow the adventures of the rebel spy, Andor, who appeared in Rogue One and helped Jyn escape from Imperial transport before bringing her to Mon Mothma so the Alliance could learn more about the Empire’s plans for the Death Star.
The series will take place during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, exploring tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.
“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna of reprising his role. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey.”
The show is one of two major live action Star Wars series in the pipeline for Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+ – the other is, of course, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano and Nick Nolte. Cassian’s solo outing, though, has found itself an equally impressive name at the helm: Schiff has written or co-written movies including Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and True Crime, and has just finished a five-year run on FX’s hugely acclaimed The Americans, overseeing the show as EP from Season 2.
Now, he’s making the jump to Disney+, where a writers room is being set up for the Cassian series, ahead of production next year.
Diego Luna to star in Rogue One prequel series
9th November 2018
Diego Luna is going back into space next year, as he reprises his role of Cassian Andor from Rogue One.
The prequel series, which was announced by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger last night, is now officially in development. The live-action programme will follow the adventures of the rebel spy, Andor, who appeared in Rogue One and helped Jyn escape from Imperial transport before bringing her to Mon Mothma so the Alliance could learn more about the Empire’s plans for the Death Star.
The series will take place during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, exploring tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.
“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
The project is, of course, for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which the House of Mouse is increasingly throwing its weight behind. And when that weight involves Marvel as well as Star Wars, the branding clout is very heavy indeed. Disney will need it to make its platform, which will be called Disney+, a viable rival to Netflix.
Luna is no stranger to the streaming world himself: he stars in the new series Narcos: Mexico. Disney, meanwhile, is no stranger to diving into the Star Wars universe, MCU-style, to find new stories to tell: it has already commissioned The Mandalorian, a new live-action series from Jon Favreau about a gunfighter and his adventures in the far ends of the galaxy. Marvel, meanwhile, is reportedly developing several limited series based on its popular supporting characters, including Loki and Scarlet Witch.
The Rogue One prequel doesn’t yet have a title, and doesn’t have a release date either. Production, though, is expected to be in 2019, and with Disney’s subscription planned to launch next year too, you can expect Cassian not to be far behind. Until then, the only question for British Star Wars fans is whether Disney+ will be available in the UK: while Disney already has DisneyLife available here, a standalone subscription platform that could become the UK’s equivalent to Disney+, the decision of DC recently to licence Titans (from its own subscription service, DC Universe) out to Netflix in the UK suggests that the international future of this growing number of individual OTT services could be more complicated than expected.
