Deep Water: Ben Affleck, Ana de Armas thriller heads to streaming
14th December 2021
Deep Water, the new erotic thriller starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, is heading straight to streaming, after its theatrical release was unexpectedly scrapped last week.
The film, produced by 20th Century Studios and New Regency, was one of the many titles that effectively became properties of Disney following the acquisition of Fox by the House of Mouse.
If the idea of an erotic thriller and Disney sound like an ill match, it was perhaps no surprise when, last year, its release date was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic to 14th January 2022. Last week, however, with the crowded theatrical marketplace resulting in underwhelming box office takings for many adult fare, it was quietly pulled from the schedules altogether.
Now, Deadline reports that the thriller will be released on Hulu in the USA, while Amazon Prime Video has acquired the international streaming rights, which would include the UK.
The film is based on the Patricia Highsmith novel (pictured) of the same name. It follows husband and wife Vic and Melinda Van Allen, who have an agreement that lets them each take lovers outside of their marriage. However, their mind games take a twisted turn when other people around them start turning up dead.
The script is written by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson, with Tracy Letts, Rachel Blanchard, Dash Mihok, Lil Rel Howery, Jacob Elordi, Kristen Connolly and Jade Fernandez also starring. The film is directed by directed by Adrian Lyne, who has a track record in the genre, having helmed Unfaithful and Fatal Attraction.
No comment has been provided officially by Amazon, Disney or Hulu, but expect confirmation and a release date imminently. The film would be a natural fit for Amazon Prime Video, which recently joined Netflix in bringing the erotic thriller into the modern age, with the release of The Voyeurs.
