There are only a few weeks to go until The Expanse Season 4 arrives and Amazon Prime Video has released a new trailer to give you a further glimpse of what’s in store.

Season 4 of The Expanse, its first as a global Amazon Original, begins a new chapter for the series, with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the UN to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity has been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt. Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources but also marked by the ruins of a long dead alien civilisation. While Earthers, Martians and Belters maneuver to colonise Ilus and its natural resources, these early explorers don’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them.

Watch: New trailer for The Expanse Season 4

It’s only a couple of months until The Expanse is back for Season 4 and a new trailer gives us a closer look at the show’s return.

The series, which is based on the books by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, unfolds across a colonised solar system 200 years in the future, when two strangers become unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy. Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) are showrunners of the project, alongside Naren Shankar (CSI, Farscape).

It stars Thomas Jane (Deep Blue Sea), Shohreh Asgdashloo (Star Trek: Beyond), Steve Strait (The Covenant), Dominique Tipper (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Wes Chatam (The Hunger Games), Cas Anvar (Punisher: War Zone), Frankie Adams (Mortal Engines) and Shawn Doyle (Frequency), Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead), Florence Faivre (The Sia Renaissance), and Cara Gee (Empire of Dirt).

New additions for Season 4 include Burn Gorman, Rosa Gilmore (The Handmaid’s Tale), Keon Alexander (YouTube Premium’s Impulse) and Jess Salgueiro (The Strain). Gilmore will play Lucia Mazur, one of the Belter refugees who have staked their claim to a new Earth-like planet on the other side of the Ring Gates, Alexander will play a Belter faction leader, and Salgueiro will play a cynical corporate security officer. Gorman, meanwhile, will play Adolphus Murtry, who, in the novels, takes control of a colony on Ilus called First Landing.

Now, we’ve got our first look at the cast in action, with a new teaser trailer for Season 4. With the Ring Gates now open to thousands of new planets, it picks up as a blood-soaked gold rush begins, igniting new conflicts between Earth, Mars, and the Belt.

Amazon also unveiled a new clip of Rocinante landing on Ilus, an unexplored planet where the crew gets caught in a violent clash between an Earth mining corporation and desperate Belter settlers, as deadly new threats from the protomolecule emerge.

Amazon also confirmed that Season 4 of The Expanse will premiere on 13th December 2019 on Amazon Prime Video.

 

Jess Salgueiro, Rosa Gilmore join The Expanse Season 4

The casting arrives just as Season 3 premieres on Amazon Prime Video, after it resurrected the project as an Amazon original following its cancellation.

“We always knew The Expanse had the potential to be ranked with the best of TV sci-fi, but, after its strong opening season gave way to the lacklustre Season 2, Season 3 sees the show hit its stride – and then some,” we wrote in our review.

Amazon has confirmed that Season 4 will premiere in 2019.

Burn Gorman has officially joined The Expanse for its fourth season.

Now, Amazon has confirmed that they will be joined by a new face: Burn Gorman. The British character needs no introduction to genre fans, after scene-stealing turns in Pacific Rim and The Man in the High Castle, not to mention his role in Torchwood. He will play Adolphus Murtry in Season 4 of The Expanse, a character who, in the novels, takes control of a colony on Illus called First Landing, ruling over the planet with brutal martial law.

“Hey screaming firehawks, and to the rest of the universe, I am Burn Gorman, and I am extremely excited to announce that I will be playing the role of Adolphus Murtry,” he told the world in a video released today. “We are wrapping Season 4 this week, but I can’t wait for you to see what we have been cooking up. It’s been a heck of a ride.”

The news that production has almost finished on Season 4 is big, given that it’s only a few months ago that Amazon revealed that it had resurrected the show, after its cancellation. Indeed, Season 3 is only just arriving on UK shores now, with the first three seasons released together on Friday 8th February on Amazon Prime Video – the first two seasons were previously available on Netflix UK. With filming almost complete on Season 4, it won’t be long now until we start seeing some glimpses of that footage. Until then, read why you should catch up with The Expanse here.

Comic-Con: The Expanse thanks fans and teases Season 3

When does a promotional tour become a victory lap? The answer could be found at The Expanse’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, as the show’s creators took to the event to thank fans for their revival.

The sci-fi series, which is based on the bestselling books by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, unfolds across a colonised solar system 200 years in the future, when two strangers become unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy. Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) are showrunners of the project, alongside Naren Shankar (CSI, Farscape). After two seasons, though, the programme was axed by SyFy, prompting a massive campaign from fans to bring it back – and Amazon stepped up to do it.

“The show is extraordinary and these guys are unbelievably talented,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos at an event in May, when he surprised everyone by announcing that talks with producers The Alcon Television Group had been successful.

How this will affect The Expanse’s future internationally is not yet clear: one of the reasons the negotiations were so complex is because of Alcon’s existing SVOD agreements, with Amazon owning the North American subscription rights but Netflix carrying the series globally outside of North America and New Zealand. But what is clear is that both fans and the makers behind the series are oven the moon.

“You saved us,” co-star Steven Strait declared in a video unveiled in Comic-Con’s Ballroom 20, thanking fans for the effort. It also contained some glimpses of concept art for what’s coming to the show – and showrunner Shankar was on hand at the panel to tease more details.

“We’re in what is really the second big movement of the books – it’s a new chapter,” he explained. “They’re no longer constrained by just being able to go in the solar system. New worlds have opened up. How humanity deals with his vast new frontier in a situation where resources have been constrained and how that effects society.”
