David Tennant, Dolly Wells, Lydia West and Stanley Tucci will star in BBC One’s Inside Man, and new images give us a first look at them in the drama.
Steven Moffat’s four-part series follows a prisoner on death row in the US, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar, as they cross paths in an unexpected way. Stanley Tucci plays the titular Inside Man, while David Tennant (Des) plays the vicar. They are joined by Dolly Wells (The Pursuit Of Love) and Lydia West (It’s A Sin), alongside Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).
Steven Moffat, creator and writer, and Sue Vertue, Executive Producer for Hartswood Films say: “This is the best ensemble we’ve ever had the chance to work with. It’s a rare privilege to see scripts come to life as beautifully as this.”
Ben Irving, Commissioning Editor, BBC Drama, adds: “Steven Moffat has created another brilliantly original and darkly playful series in Inside Man and it’s no surprise that it has attracted such an extraordinary cast. This will be a ‘must-watch’ when it lands on BBC One and iPlayer next year.”

David Tennant and Stanley Tucci are leading a stellar cast for BBC One and Netflix’s new drama, Inside Man.
Produced by Hartswood Films and created by Steven Moffat (Dracula, Sherlock, Doctor Who), the four part mini-series follows a prisoner on death row in the US, a Vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar, as they cross paths in the most unexpected way.
David Tennant (Des; Staged; Doctor Who), Dolly Wells (The Pursuit Of Love; Dracula; Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Lydia West (It’s A Sin; Years And Years; Dracula) will lead the cast of the thriller, alongside Stanley Tucci (Feud; The King’s Man; Spotlight) in the title role of the Inside Man.
Husband and wife team Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue, executive producer for Hartswood Films, say: “We’re a bit stunned, and very excited, at the acting talent we’re managing to assemble for this show. Can’t wait to crawl out of our lockdown bunker and get to work.”
Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, adds: “BBC One viewers will already know the television magic created when Steven Moffat writes for David, Dolly and Lydia. With the fantastic Stanley Tucci alongside them as our Inside Man, everything is in place for a series that will have the nation gripped.”
The series will be directed by Paul McGuigan (Sherlock; Dracula; Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool) and will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Netflix outside of the UK and Ireland. Filming will take place later this year.
BBC One orders Inside Man from Steven Moffat
29th August 2019
BBC One has ordered Inside Man, a new series from Steven Moffatt.
The Bafta and Emmy award-winning writer of Doctor Who and Sherlock may have ended his tenure in the TARDIS but remains at the top of the Beeb’s list for talent: he and fellow Sherlock creator Mark Gatiss are currently in production on Dracula, a new series that’s co-produced by BBC One and Netflix. Now, BBC One has revealed that it’s already got another Moffat joint in the pipeline.
Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content and Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, announced the commission at Edinburgh TV Festival. Inside Man is a brand new original crime thriller. The four-part mini-series produced by Hartswood Films follows a prisoner on death row in the US and a woman trapped in a cellar under an English vicarage, who cross paths in the most unexpected way…
Wenger says: “In our ongoing relationship with Steven and Sue (Vertue), they sent us this mini-series which Steven had written on spec and we commissioned it instantly. The script is a page-turner and grips you from the outset, and Charlotte and I couldn’t resist bringing this story to BBC One.”
The drama will go into production in late 2020.
