Apple TV+ has given a series order for Metropolis from Sam Esmail, inspired by the seminal Fritz Lang science fiction work of the same name.
The 1927 silent film from the German helmer is one of the most iconic in cinema history, crafting a bleak dystopian vision of a future city, in which a young working class man falls for an activist campaign for social equality – only for a robot duplicate of her to complicate their ensuing romance and a brewing revolution.
The Mr Robot and Homecoming creator will write and direct the series in its entirety, while also serving as showrunner. It will be executive produced by Esmail via his overall deal with UCP, and Chad Hamilton. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, serves as the studio.
The show joins Apple’s growing line-up of sci-fi-tinged original programming, including Amazing Stories, Far All Mankind, Foundation, Invasion, See, Swan Song and Severance.
