James R | On 16, May 2022
The Boys are back on our screens this summer, and a new trailer gives us a closer glimpse at what Season 3 has in store.
Amazon’s darkly comic series is based on the graphic novel by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It asks what happens when superheroes abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. The Boys are a gang on a quest to expose the corrupt, immoral truth about “The Seven”, a team of famous heroes, and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that protects them.
The eight-episode third season will see Laurie Holden join the cast as Crimson Countess, Sean Patrick Flanery as Gunpowder, Miles Gaston Villanueva as Supersonic and Nick Wechsler as Blue Hawk, along with Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), a WWII soldier who became the first superhero celebrity. And, of course, The Boys will be back, led by Karl Urban’s Billy – who’s currently going through a few dramatic changes.
Season 3 will premiere on 3rd June, with the first three episodes arriving together, following new episodes weekly until the finale on 8th July.

First look: Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy in The Boys Season 3
7th June 2021
Amazon Prime Video has released the first image of Jensen Ackles in Season 3 of The Boys.
The darkly comic series, co-produced with Sony Pictures Television, is based on the graphic novel by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It asks what happens when superheroes abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. As popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, the super powerful are taken down by the powerless, as “The Boys” embark on a heroic quest to expose the corrupt, immoral truth about “The Seven”, a team of famous heroes, and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that protects them.
Joining the cast for Season 3 is Supernatural star Ackles as Soldier Boy – the original superhero. After Soldier Boy fought in World War II, he became the first super celebrity, and a mainstay of American culture for decades.
Now, we’ve got a first look at him in his super suit, designed by Laura Jean Shannon and concept artist Greg Hopwood.
Shannon says: “Soldier Boy is the original bad ass. Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that.”
Knowing that Soldier Boy is a fan-favourite character from the original graphic novels, Showrunner Eric Kripke knew the importance of the Super Suit. He adds: “When I cast Jensen as Soldier Boy, the first thing I said was, ‘I’m most excited for you, because of the amazing process you’ll go through with LJ, our Super Suit designer.’ It took six months but the experience surpassed Jensen’s expectations. LJ has made a work of art that tips its hat to the WWII Soldier Boy from the comics, while taking it in a sleek new direction. And if you think the photos are cool, just wait till you see Jensen in action. It’s one of my very favourite suits. Also, now you can quit clogging my Twitter notifications with demands to see it.”
Here’s your first look at it:
Jensen Ackles joins The Boys for Season 3
18th August 2020
Jensen Ackles will suit up to join The Boys for Season 3, Amazon has announced.
The show returns for a second season on 4th September, but back in July, Amazon had already announced that a third season was on the way. One month on, it’s already lining up the cast, with Supernatural star Ackles joining the ensemble.
Ackles will portray Soldier Boy – the original superhero. After Soldier Boy fought in World War II, he became the first super celebrity, and a mainstay of American culture for decades.
Showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke, who created Supernatural, said: “When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment. I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first Superhero, he’ll bring so much humour, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys.”
Amazon renews The Boys for Season 3
24th July 2020
Amazon has officially renewed The Boys for Season 3.
The darkly comic series, co-produced with Sony Pictures Television, has been a hit for the online giant, thanks its satirical take on superheroes. Based on the graphic novel by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys was developed by showrunner Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and asks what happens when superheroes abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good.
Season 2 finds The Boys on the run from the law. They struggle to fight back, as Vought cashes in on the threat of Supervillains. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) must navigate her place in The Seven as Homelander (Antony Starr) sets his sights on taking complete control. His power is threatened with the addition of Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social media-savvy new Supe, who has an agenda of her own.
Ahead of its premiere on 4th September, Amazon has already ordered a third run. The news was announced as part of Amazon’s Comic-Con At Home panel for the show last night. You can watch that panel, and keep up with our daily highlights from Comic-Con’s online edition here.
“Amazon, in a bold and historic push to expand their ‘weirdo’ demographic, has greenlit Season 3 of The Boys!” said Kripke. “The writers and I are hard at work in the (virtual) writer’s room and we’re sad to say, the world has given us way too much material. We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that’s up to a microscopic virus.”
“Eric Kripke and the incredible cast of The Boys continue to deliver a wild and action-packed series full of surprises and can’t miss moments that have made the series a global hit,” added Vernon Sanders, Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios. “We couldn’t be more excited to see where Eric takes The Boys and The Supes in Season 3.”
Jeffrey Frost, President, Sony Pictures Television Studios added “The Boys is unlike any other show on television. It’s incredibly entertaining and compelling and elevates genre programming to a whole new level. We’re very excited about Season 3 as we know Eric Kripke and this incredibly talented cast are going to raise the bar even higher. And Prime Rewind: Inside the Boys is the perfect show to bring it all home!”
Amazon also announced a new aftershow, called Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys, hosted by Aisha Tyler. In each episode, members of the cast, creative team and other special guests will join Tyler as they dissect the events that unfold in each episode. Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys will launch on 28th August with a look back at Season 1 and continue with each new episode of Season 2.
