2017 BAFTA nominees and where you can watch them online
David Farnor | On 10, Jan 2017
La La Land is leading the 2017 BAFTA nominees, with 11 nods in total. Damien Chazelle’s musical, which just swept the board at the Golden Globes, is the undisputed frontrunner for the awards season: at the BAFTAs, it has picked up nods for Best Film, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design and Sound, not to mention Best Director, Original Screenplay and Leading Actor and Actress for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
The closest contender for La La Land’s crown are Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, which both have nine nominations. The biggest Brit of the night, meanwhile, promises to be Ken Loach, who is nominated for Director for I, Daniel Blake, which is also nominated for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Hayley Squires.
The VOD race in this year’s awards season is equally clear cut, with Amazon continuing to accelerate ahead of Netflix, thanks to its latest original film. Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea (pictured above) is up for six BAFTAs, including Best Film, Editing, Original Screenplay and Leading Actor and Supporting Actress for Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams.
Netflix’s original documentary, Ava Duvernay’s 13th, is up for Best Documentary, opposite The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years, The Eagle Huntress and Weiner. Netflix, meanwhile, also snapped up the exclusive subscription streaming rights to Under the Shadow when it premiered at Sundance, and that investment has proven wholly justified: Babak Anvari’s sensational horror is up for Oustanding British Film as well as Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Produceer.
Indeed, Netflix is winning the awards race in the living room: four of this year’s BAFTA nominees are currently available on Netflix UK, including Son of Saul and The Hard Stop. Three are available on Sky Cinema and NOW, including Hail Caesar, Zootropolis and The Jungle Book, while two are on Amazon Prime Video: The Beatles: Eight days a Week – The Touring Years and Dheepan.
A number of others are already available on VOD and/or DVD, with several released day-and-date in UK cinemas last year, including multiple nominee Notes on Blindness. (That’s almost enough to compensate our disappointment at the absence of Love & Friendship in any category.)
The awards will be handed out on Sunday 12th February. Until then, read on for a full list of this year’s nominees, including where you can watch them online – green links will appear next to any film available on VOD.
