Trailer: Carnival Row to end with Season 2
James R | On 07, Nov 2022
Carnival Row will return to Amazon Prime Video next year – and that second season will officially be its last.
Starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, the fantasy series is set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans – forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. Vignette harbors a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.
Season 2 will comprise 10 episodes and picks up with Vignette and the Black Raven plotting payback for the unjust oppression inflicted by The Burgue’s human leaders, Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) and Sophie Longerbane (Caroline Ford). Tourmaline (Karla Crome) inherits supernatural powers that threaten her fate and the future of The Row. And, after escaping The Burgue and her vengeful brother Ezra (Andrew Gower), Imogen Spurnrose (Tamzin Merchant) and her partner Agreus Astrayon (David Gyasi) encounter a radical new society that upends their plans.
Erik Oleson (Netflix’s Daredevil) has stepped up to become showrunner for Season 2, following a creative shuffle after middling reviews for Season 1, including the departure of creator Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans). Now, Amazon has announced that the show will not continue on to a third season. Its second and final chapter will premiere on 17th February, with episodes arriving weekly. Here’s the teaser trailer and poster to set the mood:

The show is wasting no time in assembling new faces in front of the camera, though, with Ali reuniting with Oleson, after theu worked together on the final season of Netflix’s Daredevil.
Ali, who was most recently seen in The Purge Season 2, will play Kaine, a Faerie allied with the Black Raven gang, alongside Vignette.
Travis Beacham departs Carnival Row
12th October 2019
Travis Beacham has departed Carnival Row, amid a creative shake-up ahead of the show’s second season.
Starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, the series is set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. Carnival Row is executive produced by Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Eli Stone), Rene Echevarria (Star Trek, Teen Wolf, Castle, Medium), Jon Amiel, Orlando Bloom, and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans). Beacham’s A Killing on Carnival Row, on which the project is based, appeared on the very first installment of the Hollywood Blacklist in 2005. He co-created the series with Echevarria, who was the drama’s original showrunner. Now, Beacham has exited the project over what Deadline reports are “creative differences”.
Marc Guggenheim took over from Echevarria as the showrunner for Season 1, but now, Guggenheim is stepping back from day-to-day involvement too. Guggenheim, who is a veteran of The CW’s Arrowverse, is busy preparing for a big crossover event between the DC superhero series.
Erik Oleson (Netflix’s Daredevil) has stepped into his shoes as showrunner for Season 2, with Guggenheim remaining attached as a consultant for the show. Oleson has taken on the role as part of his overall deal he inked with Amazon Studios earlier this year.
The behind-the-scenes changes follow a decidedly mixed reception for Carnival Row’s first season, which premiered in August.
“Amazon’s fantasy epic is rich in world details but lacks the nuance to do its themes justice,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Amazon ordered a second Season before the first had even been released, in an apparent display of early confidence. Production has just started on the second run in Prague. Filming is likely to continue during the showrunner swap, although the production may go on a brief hiatus for Oleson to review the current scripts and make any adjustments.
Amazon orders Season 2 of Carnival Row
30th July 2019
Amazon has already ordered a second season of Carnival Row, before the first has even aired.
The fantasy drama from Amazon Studios and Legendary Television is one of the streaming service’s high profile projects aimed at the genre audience left with nothing to watch now Game of Thrones has ended.
Starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, the series is set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom.
As well as Bloom and Delevingne, the series stars David Gyasi (Interstellar) as Agreus, a mysteriously wealthy faun who moves into an affluent human neighborhood in defiance of the social order, Karla Crome (Under the Dome) as Tourmaline, a quick-witted faerie poet driven from her war-torn homeland, Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) as Piety Breakspear, the regal and cunning matriarch of the powerful family that rules the city of The Burgue, and Tamzin Merchant (Salem) as Imogen Spurnrose, a young woman who sees in Agreus an opportunity to turn her aristocratic family’s fading fortunes around.
Carnival Row is from executive producers Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Eli Stone), Rene Echevarria (Star Trek, Teen Wolf, Castle, Medium), Jon Amiel, Orlando Bloom, and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans). Beacham’s A Killing on Carnival Row, on which the project is based, appeared on the very first installment of the Hollywood Blacklist in 2005.
In 2019, the series arrives with a premise that recalls Netflix’s recent attempt to start a socially topical fantasy franchise with police blockbuster Bright. Will Carnival Row fare any better? Amazon’s early renewal suggests it’s confident in what the show has to offer, but you can find out for sure on 30th August when Season 1 premieres on Amazon Prime Video. Head this way for the latest trailer.
