Solos: Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren, Uzo Aduba to star in Amazon anthology
2nd February 2021
Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren and Uzo Aduba are among the star-studded cast for Solos, a new anthology series for Amazon Prime Video.
Solos is a seven-part series that explores the deeper meaning of human connection, as explored through the lens of the individual. Solos will tell unique character-driven stories – each from a different perspective and moment in time – that illuminate that even during our most seemingly isolated moments, in the most disparate of circumstances, we are all connected through the human experience.
The project is created by David Weil, who inked an overall deal with Amazon following the success of his Amazon series Hunters. It is executive produced by Weil, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Laura Lancaster with Pixie Wespiser serving as a producer. Taylor-Johnson will be directing two episodes and Weil will also be making his directorial debut. Additional directors include Zach Braff and Tiffany Johnson.
The project was first ordered by Amazon last year and now, it’s confirmed the impressive talent it’s lined up to front it, with Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren, Uzo Aduba, Nicole Beharie, Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens and Constance Wu among the cast.
“I am beyond thrilled to be bringing Solos to life alongside this group of artists who I so deeply admire. I created this piece with a desire to capture stories about connection, hope and the search for that common hum of humanity that binds us all. I’m immensely grateful to Jennifer Salke and my incredible partners at Amazon for their unwavering support and collaboration on this special project,” said Weil.
Solos will premiere later this year.
Amazon orders sci-fi anthology from David Weil
27th October 2020
Amazon has ordered a sci-fi anthology from David Weil.
Weil, who created The Hunters and rewrote Bird Box for Netflix, inked an overall deal with Amazon studios at the start of this year, following the premiere of his Nazi-hunting period drama.
“David’s unique brand of bold, wholly original storytelling is a perfect fit for Amazon Studios,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, at the time.
Now, Amazon has ordered its second series from Weil. Deadline reports the project, which is untitled, is “described as dramatic and thought-provoking” and explores “the deeper meaning of human connection in the near future”.
The sci-fi show will comprise seven character-driven stories, with each character setting off on an adventure in an uncertain future who come to realise that everyone is connected through the human experience.
Weil will reportedly exec-produce the show alongside director/producers Melina Matsoukas (Insecure), Sam Taylor-Johnson (Gypsy) and former Alcon TV Group president Laura Lancaster (The Expanse). Taylor-Johnson and Matsoukas will each direct two episodes, while Weil will make his directorial debut on the show. Pixie Wespiser is also on board as a producer.producer.
The greenlight from Amazon follows the renewal of Hunters for a second season.
