Amazon renews Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Season 2
25th April 2018
Amazon has already renewed its new Jack Ryan series for a second season, months before the first season has even premiered.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, from Paramount Television and Skydance Television, is a reinvention of the famed and lauded Clancy hero. After the character from Clancy’s books has been portrayed on screen by Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine and Ben Affleck, this new, modern incarnation will be played by John Krasinski (A Quiet Place, 13 Hours).
The series debuts this August, with Amazon already heavily promoting the show as its big new original for 2018, as it hopes to find a breakout mainstream hit to rival the popularity of Stranger Things and Game of Thrones. After Amazon’s Super Bowl ads earlier this year, the online giant saw a more than 400% increase in Prime members placing Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on their watchlist.
“With so much early anticipation for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan from our customers and personally having the pleasure to preview the exhilarating, action-packed first season, we are excited to greenlight a second season of the series months ahead of its debut,” says Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “The new season will take our unexpected hero to a new, exciting and dangerous world.”
The show is produced by Paramount Television, Carlton Cuse’s Genre Arts, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and David Ellison’s Skydance Television. Executive producing along with Cuse, Roland and Krasinski are Platinum Dune’s Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller.
The creators of the series, Executive Producers Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Graham Roland (Fringe, Prison Break), will continue to serve as Co-Showrunners for Season 2. Additionally, Krasinski, who also serves as an Executive Producer, will be reunited with Wendell Pierce (The Wire) who will reprise his role as James Greer in the eight-episode second season.
Additionally, Lindsey Springer, Mace Neufeld, Vince Calandra, Andrew Bernstein and Skydance’s Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross will also executive produce the second season with Allyson Seeger serving as a co-executive producer.
“We’re thrilled that the first season has generated so much enthusiasm,” comments Cuse. “We couldn’t be happier to be working with Amazon and to be filming very near the Amazon to tell the next great Jack Ryan adventure.”
“From day one we only had one actor on our casting board for this series – John Krasinski,” adds Amy Powell, President of Paramount Television. “We are so excited that he is our Jack Ryan and we get to make another season with this incredibly talented team. We have been blown away by what our whole team has delivered for season one and we can’t wait for everyone to see it this summer.”
Season 2 will see Jack Ryan confront the forces in power in a dangerous, declining democratic regime in South America. The second season commences production this summer in Europe, South America and the United States.
Season 1 will premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video on 31st August. Watch the trailer here.
Amazon’s Jack Ryan drops new Super Bowl trailer
31st January 2018
Amazon is heading to the Super Bowl this weekend and it’s taking Jack Ryan with it. Amazon Prime Video will air its first ever Super Bowl advert during the match, which will showcase its new Tom Clancy series, starring John Krasinski.
The reboot of the best-selling author’s legendary character brings a modern sensibility to familiar characters, with Krasinski playing the up-and-coming CIA analyst, thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows the titular character as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale. The one-hour, eight-episode dramatic series also stars Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as James Greer and Abbie Cornish (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) as Cathy Mueller.
“Given the colossal scope and scale of the series coupled with the popularity of Tom Clancy’s novels, we knew Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan would be a natural fit for Prime Video’s first Super Bowl ad,” says Mike Benson, Head of Marketing for Amazon Studios. “The global nature of the audience provides us with a unique opportunity to give viewers a look at this thrilling new series coming to Prime.”
The 60-second ad will be featured during the Super Bowl LII telecast on Sunday 4th February and is scheduled to air immediately following the Super Bowl halftime show. The ad includes clips from historic political figures, including John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan, with the iconic Bob Dylan song “All Along the Watchtower” performed by Devlin featuring Ed Sheeran.
The series is executive produced by Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) who also serves as the showrunner, Krasinski, Academy Award nominated director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), who also directed the pilot, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, and Graham Roland (Almost Human), who wrote the pilot based on a story he and Cuse developed. Executive producing Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan with Bay at Platinum Dunes are Andrew Form (Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Brad Fuller, as well as Skydance’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Star Trek Beyond), and Marcy Ross (Grace and Frankie, Altered Carbon), alongside Mace Neufeld (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears) and co-executive producer Lindsey Springer.
All episodes of Jack Ryan will be released in August 2018 exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Here’s the new trailer:
Amazon unveils full trailer for Jack Ryan series
8th October 2017
“So what do you do?” “State department.” “That sounds.” “Boring?”
That’s the sound of a new Jack Ryan on our screens, as John Krasinski steps into the shoes of Tom Clancy’s hero. Now updated for the modern age, he’s not a CIA hotshot, but an analyst who balks at the idea of going into the field – but that doesn’t stop him being sent there anyway, after he stumbles upon a suspicious series of bank transfers and finds himself facing a rising terrorist figurehead preparing for a massive attack against the US and her allies.
Krasinski might seem like an odd choice for the odd, given he is mostly known for The US remake of the Office, but with Michael Bay’s 13 Hours under his belt, he’s proven a good fit for action heroes – and judging by the bold way this teaser introduces him, he’s not always going to be a nice guy. The question for Amazon’s reboot, created by co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, is whether the show can muster any nuance to its gung-ho story – the name Osama Bin Laden is already mentioned in the trailer.
The cast, though, is certainly strong, with Abbie Cornish as Cathy Mueller, a doctor who specialises in infectious diseases, Peter Fonda, French actress Marie-Josée Croze, Wendell Pierce, Dina Shihabi, Ali Suliman and Timothy Hutton as Singer, Ryan’s Deputy Director of Operations.
The show premieres on Amazon Prime Video in 2018. Here’s a trailer:
First look at John Krasinski in new Jack Ryan teaser
4th October 2017
Amazon continues to drip-feed teaser trailers for Jack Ryan ahead of New York Comic Con this weekend, but the latest actually contains something notable: our first look at John Krasinski as Tom Clancy’s hero.
The series, produced by Paramount TV, reimagines Ryan for 2017, with the CIA legend now turned into an up-and-coming analyst, who is thrown into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. When Ryan stumbles upon a suspicious series of bank transfers, his search for answers pulls him from the safety of his desk job and catapults him into a deadly game of cat and mouse throughout Europe and the Middle East, with a rising terrorist figurehead preparing for a massive attack against the US and her allies.
Lost’s Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland are co-showrunners of the project, which boasts an ensemble cast that includes Abbie Cornish as Cathy Mueller, a doctor who specialises in infectious diseases, Peter Fonda, French actress Marie-Josée Croze, Wendell Pierce, Dina Shihabi, Ali Suliman and Timothy Hutton as Singer, Ryan’s Deputy Director of Operations.
Here’s the teaser:
Amazon unveils two Jack Ryan teasers and official synopsis
30th September 2017
It’s all been quiet on the Jack Ryan front for some time now, with Amazon officially announcing its reboot of Tom Clancy’s hero last summer. Now, though, the show is getting closer, as Amazon begins its marketing run with two new teaser trailers.
The videos don’t reveal very much, but the title treatment alone gives a flavour of the modern vibe the programme is aiming for. The series, which stars John Krasinski, reimagines Ryan for 2017, with the CIA legend now turned into an up-and-coming analyst, who is thrown into a dangerous field assignment for the first time.
Here’s the official synopsis for the show:
“When CIA analyst Jack Ryan stumbles upon a suspicious series of bank transfers his search for answers pulls him from the safety of his desk job and catapults him into a deadly game of cat and mouse throughout Europe and the Middle East, with a rising terrorist figurehead preparing for a massive attack against the US and her allies.”
And here are the two new teasers, with more set to drop at the New York Comic Con in October:
Timothy Hutton joins Amazon’s Jack Ryan
19th March 2017
Timothy Hutton has joined Amazon’s Jack Ryan reboot.
The series, which stars John Krasinski, reimagines Ryan for the modern day. Krasinski plays him as an up-and-coming CIA analyst, who is thrown into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows him as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.
Lost’s Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland are co-showrunners of the project, which has been building out its ensemble for several months. Abbie Cornish will co-star in the show as Cathy Mueller, a doctor who specialises in infectious diseases, with Peter Fonda, French actress Marie-Josée Croze, Wendell Pierce, Dina Shihabi and Ali Suliman all bagging supporting roles. Hutton will be a recurring guest star, portraying Singer, who will be Ryan’s Deputy Director of Operations.
Hutton, who was most recently seen in ABC’s American Crime, will be familiar to audiences, thanks to a turn in Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer, not to mention his Oscar-winning performance in Robert Redford’s Ordinary People. He’s familiar to Krasinski too – the pair worked together on The Office star’s directorial debut, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.
Peter Fonda joins Amazon’s Jack Ryan
4th March 2017
Amazon keeps on building the cast for its Jack Ryan series – and its latest addition is another big name: Peter Fonda.
The actor, who has been in everything from Easy Rider to Escape from LA, has signed on for what Deadline reports is a “key role” in the reimagining of Tom Clancy’s hero for the small screen.
The show stars John Krasinski as Ryan, with Abbie Cornish co-starring as Cathy Mueller, a doctor who specialises in infectious diseases. Fond will guest star as Cathy’s father in the series’ first episode, although Deadline reports that Fond may return in subsequent episodes, with potential for the character to develop (alongside the development of Cathy as Jack’s love interest) into a recurring role.
With Lost’s Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland on co-showrunner duties, the series reboots Ryan as an up-and-coming CIA analyst in the modern world, thrown into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows him as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.
Fonda, meanwhile, will next be seen across the streaming aisle in Netflix’s The Most Hated Woman in America, which will premiere at SXSW before it premieres on 24th March.
Marie-Josée Croze joins Amazon’s Jack Ryan series
25th February 2017
French actress Marie-Josée Croze has joined the cast of Amazon’s new Jack Ryan series.
The new take on Tom Clancy’s iconic character was announced by the streaming service last year, with Lost’s Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland on co-showrunner duties. The series reimagines the hero from the novels (and subsequent films) as an up-and-coming CIA analyst in the modern world, thrown into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows him, as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.
John Krasinski will star as Ryan, with Abbie Cornish co-starring as Cathy Mueller, a doctor who specialises in infectious diseases. Now, the show has added another key female player to its ensemble, with Croze signing on for a recurring role: Sandrine, who Deadline describes as “a kick-ass Parisian intelligence agent”.
The actress is no stranger to the international scene, with roles in everything from Munich and Diving Bell and the Butterfly to Tell No One and the BBC’s Birdsong.
Morten Tyldum to direct Amazon’s Jack Ryan reboot
7th January 2017
Morten Tyldum has signed on to direct Amazon’s new Jack Ryan series.
The director, who has most recently helmed Passengers, will be holding the megaphone for the opening episode of the espionage reboot.
The show, based on Tom Clancy’s novels, was announced by the streaming service last year. Produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV, the series reimagines Clancy’s hero as an up-and-coming CIA analyst in the modern world, thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows him, as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.
John Krasinski will star as Jack Ryan, with Abbie Cornish co-starring as Cathy Mueller, a doctor who specialises in infectious diseases, and, inevitably, is destined to be caught up in Jack’s mission.
Platinum Dunes’ Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are Exec Producing, alongside Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross, plus the film franchise’s producer Mace Neufeld and Lindsey Springer of Carlton Cuse Productions.
With Lost’s Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland on co-showrunner duties, the series already has an impressive roster of talent behind it, but the addition of Tyldum gives it added class. The director also has under his belt the Oscar-nominated The Imitation Game and the brilliant Headhunters.
Adding to that the hiring of The Americans’ Dan Sackheim as a producer and director of multiple episodes and Amazon’s series is shaping up to be very promising indeed.
Wendell Pierce, Dina Shihabi and Ali Suliman join Amazon’s Jack Ryan
18th December 2016
Amazon launched its Prime Video service worldwide this week, but it’s not taking time to reflect, with casting continuing at pace for its new Jack Ryan series.
The drama, based on Tom Clancy’s novels, was announced by the streaming service earlier this year.
Now, Deadline reports that a brace of actors have signed up to appear alongside them.
Wendell Pierce, of Suits fame, will play James Greer, Ryan’s CIA boss, a highly successful case officer. He’s one of the main characters with a recurring role in series, a part that he will juggle with a regular role on CBS’ The Odd Couple (which is only returning for 13 episodes in its third season).
Ali Suliman, who’s appeared in Lone Survivor and Homeland, will play Suleiman, a “charismatic Islamic activist whose life has taken a wrong turn”. Dina Shihabi will play Hani, his wife and an independent Muslim, who is “willing to go to the ends of the earth to protect her children”. Shibabi has appeared in the film Amira & Sam and CBS’ Madam Secretary.
The series is created by Lost duo Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, who will act as co-showrunners.
Abbie Cornish to co-star in Amazon’s Jack Ryan series
5th November 2016
Abbie Cornish will co-star in Amazon’s Jack Ryan series.
The drama, based on Tom Clancy’s novels, was announced by the streaming service earlier this year. Produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV, it got a straight-to-series order, bypassing Amazon’s usual pilot process. That’s perhaps little surprise, given the talent behind the camera, from showrunning and writing team Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland (of Lost fame) to star John Krasinski.
Now, that list of talent just got another boost, with the news that Abbie Cornish will play the female lead in the show, opposite Krasinski. Cornish will play Cathy Mueller, whom Deadline describes as “a doctor specialising in infectious diseases”. “She is intelligent, competitive, a rising star in the medical world and Jack’s love interest,” adds the report.
Cornish has been an impressive presence on big and small screens for some time, following a breakthrough role in Keats drama Bright Star, a lead role in 2004’s Somersault, and miniseries Klondike. She is no stranger to action, though, with Limitless and Sucker Punch both on her CV.
Amazon’s Jack Ryan series reboots Clancy’s hero as an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows him, as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.
Amazon officially announces Jack Ryan reboot starring John Krasinski
17th August 2016
Amazon has officially announced that it has greenlit a reboot of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.
The 10-episode series, from Paramount and Skydance Television, will star John Krasinski as Jack Ryan and is projected to shoot in the US, Europe and Africa.
The show will be a reinvention of the character, with “a modern sensibility of the famed and lauded Tom Clancy hero”, who has been previously portrayed on screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.
Set to executive produce are Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Graham Roland (Almost Human), who wrote the pilot, based on a story he and Cuse developed.
The official synopsis is as follows:
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan follows an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows Ryan (Krasinski) as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the center of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.
Jack Ryan is co-produced with Paramount and Skydance Television, executive produced by Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form (Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), as well as Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross, along with Mace Neufeld (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) and Lindsey Springer.
““We’re excited to add the Jack Ryan global franchise to our robust originals pipeline,” says Roy Price, Head of Amazon Studios. “Our customers will enjoy a compelling adaptation of the action-packed spy thriller book series, further raising the bar for the quality level of storytelling that has made Prime Video a leading destination for content.”
John Krasinski to play Jack Ryan in Amazon’s TV reboot
30th April 2016
John Krasinski is the new Jack Ryan. The actor, best known for his role as the loveable Jim in the US remake of The Office, has signed on to star in Amazon’s reboot of the franchise.
Amazon first picked up the series last year, with an eye to go straight to a full season, bypassing Amazon Studios’ traditional pilot season route. Deadline notes that there is “no official green light” yet, but Krasinski’s casting is a big step towards one. Produced by Paramount TV, the show was conceived by Carlton Cuse and co-showrunner Graham Roland, using Tom Clancy’s novels as source material but coming up with a new, modern take on the character in his prime as a CIA analyst.
Krasinski follows in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine, who have all played Ryan on the big screen. The project will sees him reunite with Michael Bay, whose Platinum Dunes and Skydance Media are also onboard the project. It takes Paramount TV’s slate up to six, despite only launching in the last few years, including FOX’s Minority Report, Nickelodeon’s School of Rock and USA Network’s Shooter. Cuse, meanwhile, is no less busy, with four series on the go at the moment, from A&E’s Bates Motel to FX’s The Strain and USA Network’s Colony (currently airing on Sky 1 in the UK).
Amazon orders full season of Jack Ryan TV reboot
30th September 2015
Amazon has picked up a small-screen reboot of Jack Ryan.
Tom Clancy’s CIA agent is no stranger to the big screen, having been played by four diferent actors over the years, from Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford to Ben Affleck and, most recently, Chris Pine. Now, though, he’s heading to television, following a pitch from Lost’s Graham Roland and Carlton Cuse.
The pair suggested their fresh take on the action hero to a range of broadcasters, from Netflix to NBC, reported Deadline last week. Now, Amazon has won the bidding war for the project, which is being produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Paramount TV and Skydance TV.
Variety reports today that Amazon has ordered not just a pilot but a full season for the series, although the exact number of episodes has not yet been determined.
The deal marks yet another project for the busy Cuse, who is already working on FX’s The Strain, A&E’s Bates Motel and the upcoming Colony, the UK rights for which were nabbed by Netflix this week. Amazon, meanwhile, is stepping up its content budget significantly, with another pilot season on the way and the recent acquisition of Mr. Robot for release in October 2015.
What’s got Amazon so excited about Jack Ryan? If you haven’t seen or read any of the agent’s stories, the character moves from CIA analyst to – ultimately – President of the United States over the course of his fictional biography, which has unfolded across a dozen odd books. What seems certain, though, is that this will not be the Ryan that Clancy fans know and love. Indeed, the Pine-starring Shadow Recruit didn’t bust many blocks at the box office, despite its charismatic lead and enjoyably old-school spy antics. Deadline reports that we can expect “a new contemporary take on the character in his prime” instead.
Amazon has not officially announced the agreement yet, but you can expect word soon. Until then, for more on what’s coming soon to Amazon, head this way.
