Amazon has acquired the UK and Ireland rights to Leonardo, a new series starring Aidan Turner as Leonardo da Vinci.
The series explores the secrets and drama behind the genius: his life, his work and his personal struggles all set against the backdrop of Renaissance Italy. Turner will be joined by an all-star cast including Giancarlo Giannini (Family Novel, Catch 22) as Leonardo’s master, Andrea del Verrocchio, Matilda De Angelis (The Undoing, The Boys of the Zecchino d’Oro, Anything Can Happen) as Caterina da Cremona, his mysterious muse and dearest friend, Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor, Bates Motel) As Stefano Giraldi, young investigator of the Podestà in charge of solving the mystery at the centre of the story, Carlos Cuevas (Merlì) as Salaì, Leonardo’s apprentice and trusted friend, and James D’Arcy (Homeland, Broadchurch) as Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan.
Created by writer and producer Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files, The Man in the High Castle) and Steve Thompson (Sherlock, Doctor Who), the eight-part series is directed by Dan Percival (The Man in the High Castle, Death Comes To Pemberley) and Alexis Sweet (Don Matteo, Back to the Island).
The drama is produced by Lux Vide with Rai Fiction and Big Light Productions, in association with France Télévisions and RTVE, and co-produced and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Television.
Aidan Turner says: “As we know, Leonardo Da Vinci was a man who created an incredible body of work across so many disciplines. As an actor, to explore the inner workings of this great artist was a very exciting and humbling experience and I feel so fortunate to have worked with such a great team in Rome to make this series happen”
The series will premiere on Amazon Prime Video in the UK and Ireland on 16th April.
