All Quiet on the Western Front leads 2023 BAFTA film winners
James R | On 20, Feb 2023
The winners of the 2023 BAFTA film awards were unveiled last night, and Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front was the big winner, taking home a record-breaking 7 awards.
Based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel about a German soldier sent to the trenches during World War I, Edward Berger’s film went into the night with 14 nominations and went on to win half of them – making it the first film not in the English language to win more than 4 BAFTAs (a record set by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and the film not in the English language to win Best Film since Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, also released by Netflix. The movie also won Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Original Score and Sound.
The second biggest winner on the night was The Banshees of Inisherin, which took home 4 masks, including Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan and Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon.
Also on 4 wins was Elvis, including Leading Actor for Austin Butler, Casting, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair.
The Leading Actress prize was won by Cate Blanchett for Tár, while Charlotte Wells won the Outstanding Debut prize for Aftersun.
Oscars favourite Everything Everywhere All At Once only took home 1 prize – for Editing – while Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won Animated Film (another win for Netflix). Navalny won Documentary, which, combined with the anti-war sentiment of All Quiet, cemented the 2023 BAFTAs as a topical night ahead of the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
