“I’ve been warned about you.” That’s the sound of Amazon Prime Video retelling the infamous interview between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew in A Very Royal Scandal – and a new trailer gives us a first look at the series in action.
Featuring Michael Sheen as Prince Andrew and Ruth Wilson as Emily Maitlis, the three-part drama demonstrates the power of journalism through a pivotal moment in British history. Based on the real-life 2019 interview between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew over the scandalous accusations he faced regarding his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre, A Very Royal Scandal follows Maitlis and Prince Andrew in the lead-up to the interview, the ground-breaking event itself and the many questions left in its wake.
The series will co-star Joanna Scanlan (After Love, Notes on a Scandal) as Amanda Thirsk, Alex Jennings (Your Christmas or Mine?) as Sir Edward Young, Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) as Stewart Maclean and Claire Rushbrook (Secrets & Lies) as Sarah Ferguson. Newly revealed additional cast members include Nicholas Burns (The Serpent Queen) as Mark Gwynne, Lydia Leonard (Ten Percent) as Esme Wren, Alexander Owen (Dreaming Whilst Black) as Jake Morris, Clare Calbraith (Mr Bates vs The Post Office) as Sam Mcalister, Sam Troughton (Chernobyl) as Donal Mccabe, Honor Swinton Byrne (The Souvenir) as Princess Beatrice and Sofia Oxenham (Extraordinary) as Princess Eugenie.
The series was directed by Julian Jarrold and written by Jeremy Brock. Can it compete with Netflix’s film, Scoop, which also retold the events of the interview earlier this year? Find out on 19th September, when the series premieres on Amazon Prime Video.

A Very Royal Scandal: Michael Sheen, Ruth WIlson star in Amazon’s Prince Andrew series
16th August 2024
Newsnight’s notorious interview with Prince Andrew is getting a second screen treatment, with a new Amazon series starring Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson.
The 2019 interview, which led to the fall from grace of Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite son, has already inspired one TV adaptation, with Netflix commissioning Scoop earlier this year, starring Rufus Sewell and Gillian Anderson as Prince Andrew and Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis – along with Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard) as Amanda Thirsk, former Private Secretary to Prince Andrew, and Billie Piper (I Hate Suzie) as Sam McAlister, who negotiated and secured the bombshell booking.
Now, Variety reports that Amazon is booting up its own retelling of the interview, with Michael Sheen once again stepping into the shoes of a real life person as Prince Andrew and Ruth Wilson (The Affair) playing Emily Maitlis. The three-part series will follow Emily’s personal and professional journey, leading up to her interview with Andrew.
The series, titled, A Very Royal Scandal, follows on from Amazon’s A Very English Scandal, starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, and A Very British Scandal, starring Claire Foy and Paul Bettany. It’s written by Jeremy Brock, with Julian Jarrold at the helm.
Sheen is no stranger to Amazon, having starred in Good Omens. The rest of the cast includes Joanna Scanlan (After Love) as Amanda Thirsk, another Amazon veteran Alex Jennings (Your Christmas or Mine?) as Sir Edward Young, and Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) as Stewart Maclean.
Production is underway in the UK.
