88:88 will be released exclusively on MUBI on Friday 18th March.
The experimental debut feature from Canadian director Isiah Medina is described by MUBI as a “densely layered montage that is both formally rigorous and emotionally raw [and] explodes with ideas about time, love, knowledge, poverty, and poetry”.
The official synopsis for the film reads: You can not pay your bill. Your heat and lights are cut. You pay. The clocks initially flash 88:88. You set the clocks. You can not pay. You pay. 88:88. Repeat. 88:88. Cut. You stop setting your clock to the time of the world. You make do with suspension. 88:88.
88:88 received its US premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, with a cast that includes Anne Valencia, Myles Taylor, Erik Berg, Eliza Bronte and Avery Medina. The movie went on to finish sixth in the Indiewire Critics’ Poll for Best Undistributed Film of 2015.
Now, MUBI has stepped up to distribute the film, securing the exclusive global streaming rights to the movie. It will be available to stream for 30 days from Friday 18th March, with new additions on the site arriving every day for one month, forming a rolling carousel of curated classics and world cinema.
The release of 88:88 marks the latest in a long line of exclusive deals for MUBI. Last month, it released the rediscovered Dennis Hopper documentary The American Dreamer, while last year it saw the global premiere of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Junun. The site has also teamed up with New Wave Films to release Miguel Gomes’ Cannes hit Arabian Nights in May, following a release in cinemas on 22nd April. MUBI will also launch its service in China this year.
