2016 BAFTA winners and where to watch them online

The Revenant stomped through the last night’s BAFTAs, beating off the competition like a bear faced with Leonardo DiCaprio. Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s survival behemoth took home five prizes in total, including Best Picture, Best Director and – after years of nominations – Best Actor for Leo.
The resulting carnage left few others in the main frame, with Spotlight and The Big Short, both seeming frontrunners at one point, with just one gong apiece. But while the result was a resounding victory for The Revenant, there was room for other films to get their share of attention. Alongside Room’s Best Actress, Brie Larsson, The Hateful Eight’s Best Score, by Ennio Morricone, and Star Wars Episode 7’s Best Special Effects, Mad Max: Fury Road emerged as something of a favourite, making its way home with four awards (the second biggest haul of the evening), mostly relating to its technical and costume work.
It was a good night for British film, too, with Amy taking Best Documentary and Kate Winslet upsetting the Supporting Actress race with her turn in Steve Jobs. Mark Rylance also waltzed off with the Supporting Actor prize for Bridge of Spies.
The real winner, though, was John Boyega, who was crowned Best Rising Star by public vote, declaring the victory a “fluke” and saying this afterwards:

And what of Netflix? Beast of No Nation’s Idris Elba was nowhere to be seen on the winners’ list, while record-breaking day-and-dater 45 Years was pipped to the Outstanding British Film post by Brooklyn. But streaming continues to play a part in making awards contenders available to see, with both Outstanding Debut winner Theeb and Best Non-English-Language Film champion Wild Tales available on UK streaming services – both of which could otherwise struggle to find an audience.
