1917 leads BAFTA winners as Marriage Story and Klaus bag awards

1917 dominated the 2020 BAFTAs last night, with Netflix taking home two awards.
Sam Mendes’ war movie bagged a total of seven trophies, which were dished out by Graham Norton at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The film took home not only technical awards such as Best Cinematography, Production, Design, Visual Effects and Sound, but also bagged Best British Film and Best Director, as well as the coveted Best Film.
The resulting sweep shut out many of the other major contenders this year, but still left space in the acting and screenplay categories for others to shine. Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor, one of three awards that went to Joker – including Best Score for Hildur Guđnadóttir and the inaugural Casting prize – while Judy won Best Actress for Renee Zellweger. Once Upon in a Time in Hollywood won Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt.
Parasite, one of the other big hitters this awards season, took home Original Screenplay and Film Not in the English Language. The result was an evening that went largely as expected, although there was a welcome chance for Bait to be celebrated in the Outstanding Debut category, while For Sama proved a deserved winner of Best Documentary.
And what of the disruptor Netflix? It went into the race with a record 23 nominations – including 10 for The Irishman alone – and managed to convert that into two wins: Best Supporting Actress to Marriage Story for Laura Dern and Best Animated Film for Sergio Pablos and Jinko Gotoh’s Klaus. Michael Ward, the breakout star of Netflix’s Top Boy revival, meanwhile, took home the EE Rising Star Award.
