Part 4: 2023 BAFTA nominees

This weekend sees Hollywood head to London for the 2023 BAFTAs, with Richard E Grant hosting the ceremony. With 45 features receiving nominations film fans will be spending this awards season catching up with the main contenders. Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front leads the pack with 14 nominations – a reminder that a number of the nominees are available to stream already.
The ceremony will air at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 19th February. For the first time, the final four category winners will be announced live on the TV – EE Rising Star, Leading Actor, Leading Actress and Best Film.

Tár (5 nominations)
Cate Blanchett stars in Todd Field’s drama about Lydia Tár, a groundbreaking conductor of a major German Orchestra whose life begins to unravel in a singularly modern way.
Till (1 nomination)
In true story, Mamie Till-Mobley relentlessly pursues justice for her 14-year-old son who, in 1955, was lynched while in Mississippi.
Top Gun: Maverick (4 nominations)
Tom Cruise is on thrilling form in this surprisingly moving sequel.
Triangle of Sadness (3 nominations)
Robin Östlund’s broad, grotesque seaborne satire shows society as a sinking ship – and revolution as rearranging the deckchairs.
Turning Red (1 nomination)
A character drama powered by a big idea, Pixar’s rare and intimate tale of puberty is terrific and deeply resonant.
The Whale (4 nominations)
Brendan Fraser stars in Darren Aronofsky’s drama about a reclusive English teacher attempting to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.

Viola Davis leads a formidable cast in this action-packed story about the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s.
The Wonder (1 nomination)
Florence Pugh delivers a terrific performance Sebastián Lelio’s powerful period drama.
