Part 2: 2023 BAFTA nominees

This weekend sees Hollywood head to London for the 2023 BAFTAs, with Richard E Grant hosting the ceremony. With 45 features receiving nominations film fans will be spending this awards season catching up with the main contenders. Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front leads the pack with 14 nominations – a reminder that a number of the nominees are available to stream already.
The ceremony will air at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 19th February. For the first time, the final four category winners will be announced live on the TV – EE Rising Star, Leading Actor, Leading Actress and Best Film.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (4 nominations)
Emma Thompson stars in this comedy-drama about a retired teacher who recruits a sex worker (Daryl McCormack) to help her with a quest of post-marital awakening.
The Good Nurse (1 nomination)
Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne headline Tobias Lindholm’s chilling true crime thriller about a mass murderer and a shocking cover-up.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (3 nominations)
Guillermo del Toro’s dark, visually stunning take on Pinocchio isn’t afraid to do its own thing.
Living (3 nominations)
Bill Nighy stars in Oliver Hermanus’ remake of Ikiru, which follows a man reduced by years of office routine to a shadow existence, who makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (1 nomination)
Marcel is an adorable shell who lives with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them among the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family.

Moonage Daydream (1 nomination)
Brett Morgen directs this cinematic odyssey exploring David Bowie’s creative journey.
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (1 nomination)
Lesley Manville stars in this heartwarming drama about a widow in 1950s London who falls in love with a couture Dior dress, and decides that she must have one of her own.
Navalny (1 nomination)
This documentary about the assassination attempt against Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is a timely, gripping watch.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (1 nomination)
Everyone’s favorite leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying feline, Puss in Boots, returns in a new adventure from the Shrek universe as the daring outlaw discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. With only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: Kitty Softpaws.
