RIP Lauren Bacall

Lauren Bacall has passed away at the age of 89.
The legendary actress made her debut in To Have and Have Not at the age of just 19. The film paired her with Humphrey Bogart, whom she would go on to marry, delivering that iconic line “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?”
There wasn’t much about Lauren that wasn’t iconic. She and Bogart electrified the screen again in The Big Sleep, Howard Hawks’ definitive film noir – indeed, they were so good together that Bogie and Bacall became Hollywood’s first power couple, the kind of celebrity that seems so commonplace nowadays.
Stunning and smouldering in her younger years and no less dazzling when older, Bacall’s career went and went, spanning more than five decades. After an Oscar nomination for The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996, she won an honorary statue in 2009 for her “central place in the Oder golden age of motion pictures”.
How to Marry a Millionaire. Murder on the Orient Express. It’s hard to imagine motion pictures without her, the kind of star who could make whistling seem like something that had only just been invented.
