As one of the smaller streaming platforms in the UK, STARZPLAY sometimes struggles when it comes to having a large enough library to compete with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. 2021 has seen it stand out through the exclusive release of Stephen King’s The Stand and the second season of Pennyworth – and now, weekly episodes of Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Heels. This month sees the debut of new exclusive series Dr Death, starring Joshua Jackson, Christian Slater and Alec Baldwin, as well as Curtis Jackson’s new series, BMF.
Here’s what’s coming soon to STARZPLAY UK in September 2021:
Dr Death – 12th September
Based on the hit US podcast from Wondery, “Dr. Death” is based on the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community. Young, charismatic and ostensibly brilliant, Dr. Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed. Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead. As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shugart (AnnaSophia Robb) set out to stop him. “Dr. Death” explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenceless among us. Episodes arrive on Sundays.
BMF – 26th September
From executive producer 50 Cent, BMF is inspired by the true story of two brothers who rose from the decaying streets of southwest Detroit in the late 1980s and gave birth to one of the most influential crime families in the United States. Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory’s charismatic leadership, Terry “Southwest T” Flenory’s business acumen and the fraternal partnership’s vision beyond the drug trade and into the world of hip-hop would render the brothers iconic on a global level. Their unwavering belief in family loyalty would be the cornerstone of their partnership and the crux of their eventual estrangement. This is a story about love, kinship and capitalism in the pursuit of the American dream. Episodes arrive on Sundays.
Dune – 1st September
A Duke’s son leads desert warriors against the galactic emperor and his father’s evil nemesis when they assassinate his father and free their desert world from the emperor’s rule in David Lynch’s adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel. Watch now
The Last Stand – 1st September
The leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff. Watch now
Heels – Weekly
Heels is a story about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals, Jack Spade and Ace Spade, war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy, and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind. Episodes arrive on Sundays.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan – Weekly
Set in South Jamaica, Queens, in 1991, “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” is a prequel to the original Power franchise. This family drama revolves around the coming of age of Kanan Stark, the 15-year-old child of Raq Thomas, a cocaine distributor with an emerging network of dealers across NYC. “Raising Kanan” explores themes of identity, violence, and legacy, but it also takes a deep dive into the pathology of family, discovering that those closest to us are the ones who betray us most. Season one explores these betrayals, secrets, and lies and the ways in which they fester, metastasize and ultimately erupt. Episodes arrive on Sundays, until the final on 26th September.
STARZPLAY costs £4.99 a month. The platform is available on iOS, Android, Apple TV and Virgin Media On Demand or through Amazon Prime Video Channels, as an add-on subscription to your existing account.
