As one of the smaller streaming platforms in the UK, STARZPLAY sometimes struggles when it comes to having a large enough library to compete with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. 2021 has seen it stand out through the exclusive release of Stephen King’s The Stand and the second season of Pennyworth – and now, through the growth of its extended Power universe, as well as weekly episodes of Blindspotting and Godfather of Harlem, starring Forest Whitaker.
Marie Antoinette – 1st July
An electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history’s favourite villainess, Marie Antoinette, who married France’s young and indifferent King Louis XVI.
Tyler Perry Presents Peeples – 1st July
A man’s (Craig Robinson) plan to propose to his girlfriend (Kerry Washington) goes hilariously awry when he becomes entangled in a web of white lies and comic dysfunction with her upper-crust family.
Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club – 1st July
An ex-con goes back to his old ways, wondering if he can ever turn his life around, but things become more complicated when he falls for a woman who makes her living upholding the law.
Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story – 1st July
Director Michael Winterbottom (Jeremy Northam) attempts to shoot the adaptation of Laurence Sterne’s essentially unfilmable novel, “The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.”
Power Book III: Raising Kanan – 18th July
The third book within the growing Power Universe franchise. Experience the early 90s in this new coming-of-age prequel story revolving around character Kanan Stark. It stars Patina Miller (“Madam Secretary;” The Hunger Games Franchise) as Raquel “Raq” Thomas and Mekai Curtis as Kanan Stark. The cast also includes Omar Epps (“House,” Love and Basketball), London Brown (“Ballers”), Malcolm Mays (“Them,” “Snowfall”), Hailey Kilgore (“Amazing Stories”), Joey Bada$$ (Two Distant Strangers), Toby Sandeman (“The Royals”), Shanley Caswell (The Conjuring), Lovie Simone (The Craft: Legacy) and Quincy Brown (Dope).
Damned: Season 1 – 25th July
Set in a chaotic, urban social services department, “Damned” is a dramedy that follows the crazy day-to-day lives of beleaguered but plucky social workers who must face the whims and follies of life while trying to navigate the ups and downs of their professional and personal lives. Along the way, they find creative and comical solutions that help them maintain a precarious balance between laughter and tears, the welfare of their clients, and the health of their own personal relationships.
