What’s coming soon to STARZPLAY UK in May 2020?
David Farnor | On 05, May 2020
As one of the smaller streaming platforms in the UK, STARZPLAY struggles when it comes to having a large enough library to compete with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. It has to therefore focus on quality over quantity, and 2020 has been a promising proof of that strategy’s success, with Doom Patrol joined by Stephen King’s Castle Rock and Jimmi Simpson noir thriller Perpetual Grace Ltd.
After debuting Harmony Korine’s latest movie and the final run of Vida in April, May’s big hitter is the return of Rig 45, a little-known property in the UK but a smash success on Nordic streaming service Viaplay.
Manhunt: Deadly Games – Out now
After a deadly terrorist attack at the 1996 Olympic Games, FBI agents hunt for an elusive serial bomber, while a wrongly-accused innocent man fights to clear his name.
Heder – Out now
Heder is the name of a law firm run by Karin Stenshufvud, Janni Can, Nour Navidi and Elin Holm. They represent victims of crime, particularly women who have been subjected to violence and sex crimes.
Rig 45: Season 2 – 7th May
A few months after the end of the previous season a dead body floats ashore dressed in a Benthos Oil jacket. The body is thought to belong to Petra Dahlberg’s brother Fredrik, who was killed by members of the Rig 45 crew, causing Petra to avenge him. The case is reopened by police inspector Emma Marshall and her assistant Trevor Webb. Emma realizes that they need to bring back Petra to Rig 45 in order to go over the events around Fredrik’s death before the rig is dismantled, due to the explosions in Season 1. The police officers and Petra go to Rig 45 on one of Benthos Oil’s ships. The Benthos team is led by Susanne Munch-Petersen from the Benthos Oil board. Her presence makes Emma suspect that Benthos Oil has a hidden agenda. The police begin their investigation, and Emma soon realizes that Fredrik’s death was no accident, but a murder. But who committed it and why?
Hightown – 17th May
Hightown is set on iconic Cape Cod, and follows one woman’s journey to sobriety, intertwined with an unfolding murder investigation. Jackie Quiñones (Monica Raymund, Chicago Fire, The Good Wife), a hard-partying National Marine Fisheries Service agent, has her free-wheeling life thrown into disarray when she discovers a body on the beach – another casualty of Cape Cod’s opioid epidemic. As a result of this trauma, Jackie takes the first steps toward becoming sober — until she becomes convinced that it’s up to her to solve the murder. Now at odds with Sergeant Ray Abruzzo (James Badge Dale, Only the Brave), an abrasive but effective member of the Cape Cod Interagency Narcotics Unit, Jackie starts to spiral. And she’s not alone. Ray, too, spins out of control; losing himself in the investigation. The lives of everyone connected to this murder crash and converge, reminding us just how complicated – and deadly – our addictions can be.
