October is finally here and that means one thing: The Walking Dead. AMC’s horror smash hit is back for its 10th run, as the gang of survivors continue trying to stay alive in the zombie apocalypse without Andrew Lincoln. Helen Mirren’s new drama, Catherine the Great, and Damon Lindelof’s new take on Watchmen are equally exciting additions to your watchlist – and, for true crime lovers, the launch of Sky Crime means a whole new wave of box sets and US TV debuts to keep your detective instincts finely honed.

In Defense Of (Sky Crime) – 2nd October

In Defense Of provides a chilling account of the complex relationships between notorious defendants – including Jodi Arias, Clive Doyle and Timothy McVeigh – and the attorneys that represented them. This four-part series starts with story of John Henry Browne, the criminal defence attorney who represented one of history’s most infamous serial killers, Ted Bundy. We hear from Browne directly, as he recounts the challenges faced in the case, as well as the personal and professional journey he took throughout the case.

Catherine the Great: Season 1 (Sky Atlantic, 9pm) – 3rd October

Starring multi-award-winning Dame Helen Mirren, this new Sky original focuses on Russia’s longest ruling female empress in the turbulent final years of her life. The most powerful female monarch in history, Catherine is famed across the world for her scandalous affairs and sexually liberal attitudes.

I Love You, Now Die (Sky Crime) – 6th October

In this eye-opening new documentary brought via Sky Crime, I Love You Now Die gives you unprecedented access into a suicide case that sparked sensational headlines and captured a nation. This is the story of Michelle Carter, the teenager placed on trial for coercing her boyfriend to kill himself via a series of disturbing text messages. The case is brought to light in a way that’s sure to get crime fans pulses racing.

The Walking Dead: Season 10 (FOX UK, 9pm) – 7th October

Season 10 of AMC’s long-running zombie hit continues to chart a world without Rick, as the threat of The Whisperers grows.

Conman: The Life and Crimes of Mark Acklom (Sky Crime) – 7th October

Mark Acklom is Britain’s most notorious conman. Over a thirty year criminal career Acklom duped countless innocent victims out of millions of pounds. As a teenager, he stole his father’s credit card and lived the high life across Europe. His family eventually turned him in, resulting in a two year prison sentence and leaving his family bankrupt. Afterwards, Acklom went off the radar for two decades, re-emerging in the West Country under a series of false identities and conning his way into a relationship with Carolyn Woods by posing as an MI6 agent. He then swindled his ‘one true love’ out of £800,000. Carolyn’s efforts to report this to the police yielded little results, so she instead turned to Martin Brunt, the legendary Sky News crime reporter who has since been tracking Acklom and following his story.

In the Long Run: Season 2 (Sky One, 10pm) – 16th October

Idris Elba’s story of love, laughs and community is back for its second series. In the Long Run picks up where it left off with the Easmon family taking everything 80s Britain can throw at them.

Who Killed Garrett Phillips? (Sky Crime) – 20th October

This heart-wrenching two-part documentary explores the case of 12-year-old Garrett Phillips, who was murdered in his home, in a small town in upstate New York in late 2011. Police quickly zeroed in on a suspect in this unthinkable crime: Oral “Nick” Hillary, a Black man in the mostly white community, the soccer coach at Clarkson University and the ex-boyfriend of Garrett’s mother, Tandy Cyrus. Who Killed Garrett Phillips? chronicles the five years following the murder, from the initial police investigation, the account of Garrett’s grief-stricken family as they relentlessly seek justice, and the arrest and numerous legal twists and turns that culminated in Hillary’s trial for murder, five years after the crime.

Watchmen: Season 1 (Sky Atlantic, 9pm) – 21st October

Created by Damon Lindelof, this modern-day reimagining of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ groundbreaking graphic novel about masked vigilantes introduces us to a world where the events of the original text have happened, where Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons) has grown old, and where Rorschach has inspired a movement of resistance.

Widows – 4th October

The widows of a criminal gang set out to finish what their partners started in this masterful Steve McQueen thriller starring Viola Davis, who won a BAFTA nomination for her role as Veronica, and Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya.

Benjamin – 9th October

Simon Amstell’s painfully hilarious drama is a caustic, sweet, quotable gem.

Goosebumps 2 – 18th October

Halloween lurches into life when a group of youngsters unwittingly unleash all manner of monsters from the pages of RL Stine’s best-selling books. Creepy comedy sequel with Ken Jeong and Jack Black.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – 19th October

Third instalment in the animated series following Hiccup as he searches for dragon utopia “The Hidden World”, featuring an all-star line-up of voice talent including Jonah Hill, Kirsten Wiig, Kit Harrington, Gerard Butler and Cate Blanchett.

The Old Man and the Gun – 20th October

After the transcendent beauty of A Ghost Story, David Lowery slows down for this slight but splendid caper starring Robert Redford as an ageing bank robber.

Halloween (2018) – 25th October

Sequel to John Carpenter’s horror classic, with Jamie Lee Curtis returning as Laurie Strode and preparing to face off against hulking masked killer Michael Myers as he returns on Halloween night.

Boy Erased – 27th October

After revealing he is gay, Jared (Lucas Hedges) is sent to “conversion therapy” in this award-winning drama based on true events with Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and Troye Sivan.
